A bio-engineered dog fights for its life and its right to life. From the Arthur C. Clark Award-winning author of CHILDREN OF TIME.

My name is Rex. I am a good dog.

Rex is also seven foot tall at the shoulder, bulletproof, bristling with heavy calibre weaponry and his voice resonates with subsonics especially designed to instil fear. With Dragon, Honey and Bees, he's part of a Multiform Assault Pack operating in the lawless anarchy of Campeche, Mexico. A genetically engineered Bioform, he's a deadly weapon in a dirty war. All he wants to be is a Good Dog. And to do that he must do exactly what Master says and Master says he's got to kill a lot of enemies.

But who, exactly, are the enemies? What happens when Master is tried as a war criminal? What rights does the Geneva Convention grant weapons? Do Rex and his fellow Bioforms even have a right to exist?

And what happens when Rex slips his leash?

Adrian Tchaikovsky never fails to please, but this was an exceptional story. Hopefully we see it made into a miniseries

Excellent work, as expected

Prologue was much too long. Love stories with the inner voice of robot types. So few of them!

The narrator for Rex really gave a less than stellar performance. They were a great choice given their voice was perfect for what you'd might expect Rex to sound like and was pretty good with the other characters as well. Unfortunately, their pronunciation of several words was pretty off the mark and really broke the emersion of the story telling for me. The other Actors were fantastic!

Fantastic concept and execution!

Deeply moving, intellectual, and thought provoking book. Highly recommend if you are a fan of Tchaikovsky.

Wonderful book

This is a story that moves quickly detailing the thoughts and actions of a genetically engineered dog/human/AI hybrid and his companions, all of whm were designed/bred as soldiers.
The dilemma of what constitutes a "person" is a central theme. Though the book isn't long enough to do much more than scratch the surface of the question, it does give you a different perspective that the typical self-aware robot kind of thing.
Dog people will really like this book. It a good bit faster paced than the Children of Time books. I liked it.

Unique story w/ moral dilema

I loved how the characters were very distinct and compete. Rex is totally lovable. A good dog. Umos is the true hero. Self centered enough to survive.

Consistency of character

I was laughing at first with the opening narration of a war dogs mind. Then I realized it was because I’m so used to media not taking itself seriously that I forgot I could take a silly concept seriously. As the book went on, I found it far less silly and let myself get swallowed up by another of my favorite authors stories. I nearly cried by the end. Rex is a good dog.

I started listening to this because I thought it was a funny concept.

The story made for some interesting discussions and debates. The author does it again. Who knows what our future would be with the way science and tech are evolving?

Interesting “what ifs”

I'm a Tchaikovsky fan, but I don't expect to be delighted by everything he writes. The description of Dogs of War made me hesitate on its purchase for nearly a year. Maybe I was, in fact, not ready to appreciate it before. However, I found it to be grossing - as in missing sleep engrossing. The plot was well-paced, the character development intriguing yet credible, the writing nearly poetic, and the voice performances top notch.

Headed to the next one soon.
