H. P. Lovecraft nació en 1890 en Providence, Rhode Island, donde vivió la mayor parte de su vida. Escribió muchos ensayos y poemas al principio de su carrera, pero gradualmente se centró en la escritura de historias de terror, después del advenimiento en 1923 de la revista pulp Weird Tales, a la que contribuyó con la mayor parte de su ficción. Sin embargo, su corpus de ficción relativamente pequeño (tres novelas cortas y unos sesenta cuentos) ha ejercido una gran influencia en el trabajo posterior en el campo, y está considerado como el principal autor estadounidense de ficción sobrenatural del siglo XX. H. P. Lovecraft murió en Providence en 1937.
