Historia
In Hauntings, James Hollis considers how we are all governed by the presence of invisible forms - spirits, ghosts, ancestral and parental influences, inner voices, dreams, impulses, untold stories, complexes, synchronicities, and mysteries - that move through us through history. He offers a way to understand them psychologically, examining the persistence of the past in influencing our present, conscious lives and noting that engagement with mystery is what life asks of each of us. From such engagements, a deeper, more thoughtful, more considered life may come.

What does it really mean to be a grown-up in today's world? We assume that once we "get it together" with the right job, marry the right person, have children, and buy a home, all is settled and well. But adulthood presents varying levels of growth and is rarely the respite of stability we expected. Turbulent emotional shifts can take place anywhere between the ages of 35 and 70 when we question the choices we've made, realize our limitations, and feel stuck - commonly known as the "midlife crisis".

The various sections illustrate internal obstacles such as intimidation by the magnitude of the project, the readiness to avoid the hard work, and gnawing self-doubt, but also provide tools to strengthen consciousness to take these obstacles on. Additional essays address living in haunted houses, the necessity of failure, and the gift and limits of therapy.

Historia
In The Archetypal Imagination, Hollis offers a lyrical Jungian appreciation of the archetypal imagination. He argues that without the human mind's ability to form energy-filled images that link us to worlds beyond our rational and emotional capacities, we would have neither culture nor spirituality. Drawing upon the work of poets and philosophers, Hollis shows the importance of depth experience, meaning, and connection to an "other" world.

Prisms: Reflections on the Journey We Call Life summarizes a lifetime of observing, engaging, and exploring why we are here, in service to what, and what life asks of us. These 11 essays, all written recently, examine how we understand ourselves, and often we have to reframe that understanding, the nature and gift of comedy, the imagination, desire, as well as our encounters with narcissism, and aging. James Hollis explores the roadblocks we encounter and our on-going challenge to live our brief journey with as much courage, insight, and resolve as we can bring to the table.

Exploring Jung’s concept of the Shadow, the unconscious parts of our self that contradict the image of the self we hope to project, Why Good People Do Bad Things guides you through all the ways in which many of our seemingly unexplainable behaviors are manifestations of the Shadow. In addition to its presence in our personal lives, Hollis looks at the larger picture of the Shadow at work in our culture. Accepting and examining the Shadow as part of one’s self, Hollis suggests, is the first step toward wholeness.

When you think of a NASA astronaut, the image that probably comes to mind is one of the All-American hero. But former NASA astronaut turned business speaker and bestselling author Mike Massimino was pretty much the opposite. He was the underdog, one of the weakest swimmers during NASA training and a “gangly, scrawny, working-class kid from Long Island with bad eyesight and a fear of heights." Still, after working hard and working smart, Massimino had a successful career as an astronaut. Moonshot shares Massimino’s hard-earned lessons and how to apply them in work and life.

Historia
The midlife crisis is the butt of so many jokes, but this long-derided life stage has an upside. What if we could reframe our thinking about the natural transition of midlife not as a crisis, but as a chrysalis—a time when something profound awakens in us, as we shed our skin, spread our wings, and pollinate our wisdom? In Learning to Love Midlife, Chip Conley offers an alternative narrative to the way we commonly think of our 40s, 50s and 60s. Drawing on the latest social science research, inspiring stories, and timeless wisdom, he reveals 12 reasons why life gets better with age.

Generations have been taught that evolution implies there is no overarching purpose to our existence. Some scientists take this logic one step further, suggesting that evolution is intrinsically atheistic and goes against the concept of God. But is this true? By integrating emerging principles from a variety of scientific disciplines—ranging from evolutionary biology to psychology—Yale Professor Samuel Wilkinson provides a framework of evolution that implies not only that there is an overarching purpose to our existence, but what this purpose is.

Most concise book with excellent philosophy that I read
Don’t get me wrong. I read a ton of philosophy and psychology books. However Dr. Hollis in his wisdom is so refined and well spoken and balanced that he was able to write a very short book. Each chapter has a very unique point and I am so grateful that I bought this book. The narration is fantastic as well. I even bought a paper copy.

Prepare for enlightenment
I’ve embarked on this journey of un-f***ing myself from all the ways of thinking I’ve had over the years, and this book is definitely a light at the end of the tunnel. It is hard-nosed guide to following your true intuition and how to do it

Some content redundant from other of Hollis books
Thought provoking stories and information. Will have to listen again to glean obscure nuggets of wisdom. A lot seems to suggest to reflect and find your own path.

Extraordinary compilation of Dr. Hollis' works
Grateful for yet another of James Hollis' volumes distilling for consumption Jungian conceptions into understandable explanations and practical application. I believe I have read his entire shelf, yet never is there a trace of redundancy. Again, grateful for work of Dr. Hollis.

Creating a path for the soul
Hollis asks the questions and offers insight in service of enlarging the soul and diminishing the constricting forces of ego. I am indebted to James Hollis for facilitating the opening in me to endeavor to live consciously, encounter my shadows, and seek always to align myself with living meaningfully. Living the Examined Life reads like Hollis's collected wisdom--wisdom that finds resonance in living the big questions--and is best read slowly and pondered deeply.
