Publisher's Summary

The fantastic prequel to The Good Daughter, the stunning new stand-alone from the number-one best-selling author of the Will Trent and Grant County series.

Protecting someone always comes at a cost.

At the age of 13, Charlie Quinn's childhood came to an abrupt and devastating end. Two men, with a grudge against her lawyer father, broke into Charlie's home - and after that shocking night, her world was never the same.

Now a lawyer herself, Charlie has made it her mission to defend those with no one else to turn to. So when Flora Faulkner, a motherless teen, begs for help, Charlie is reminded of her own past and is powerless to say no.

But honor student Flora is in far deeper trouble than Charlie could ever have anticipated. Soon she must ask herself: How far should she go to protect her client? And can she truly believe everything she is being told?

Well it ain't Will Trent but...

What was one of the most memorable moments of Last Breath?

Really? If I told the most memorable moment I would also need to say what and why and that would give away the whole story.

Have you listened to any of Kathleen Early’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes I have and although not in my top 10 she does a very good job narrating this book.

Any additional comments?

This is a very good prequel and gives some good background on the main character of this book, Charlie Quinn. She takes on a 15 year old girl as a client who is in the custody of her grandparents and wants to be emancipated. The reasons she gives seem plausible enough but through out the story there are many twists leading to a very shocking conclusion and cliffhanger that I imagine will be resolved/responded to in book 1.
I enjoyed and Recommend this short story.

Best Book of 2017 and 2017 isn't even over.

What did you love best about Last Breath?

Slaughter is brilliant. Rarely does an author, not only tell a story, but makes you feel real heartache, pain, joy, anger and laughter for the characters. Slaughter doesn't tell the story, she takes you, picks you up, and places you perfectly in the world she is writing about. You see what she wants you to see, you feel what she wants you to feel, and you fear what she wants you to fear.

What other book might you compare Last Breath to and why?

Read her other books. Make sure you read them in order - start with the Grant County series, then go to the Will Trent series. They are so very good. As for other books by other authors, I'd recommend Shadow Man by Cody McFadyen. Huge fan of that series, and it is somewhat similar to Slaughter's type of writing.

What does Kathleen Early bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She handles the narration perfectly. Whether male or female, southern accent or New York accent, she is believable. Great pace as well.

Any additional comments?

I usually don't write reviews. However, this was so good, it is too good for audiobook listeners to pass up.

Prequel novella to The Good Daughter series

Karin Slaughter introduces lawyer Charlie Quinn as a new series protagonist in Last Breath. The first novel in the series titled The Good Daughter will be released tomorrow. I admit without reservation to being a huge fan of Karin Slaughter's books; I have all of them and she has never written a bad or even a mediocre novel or short story/novella. Slaughter is simply one of the best authors of suspense mystery/thrillers. Charlie Quinn promises to be as popular as her other major series protagonists who are Sara Linton in the Grant County series and Will Trent in the Will Trent series. If Karin Slaughter is the author, I will read or listen to it because she never, never disappoints.

Likewise, Last Breath does not disappoint. The story is about an almost 16 year old girl who seeks out lawyer Charlie Quinn to represent her in her quest to become an emancipated minor. Is she really being physically abused by her guardian paternal grandparents who she also says are spending the money her mother left her in trust? Are things really as them seem?

Kathleen Early does her normal outstanding job of narration Karin Slaughter's books.

This is a PREQUEL to The Good Daughter!!

It seems like a lot of others reviews did not realize this is a PREQUEL teaser to The Good Daughter coming out on 8/8/17. It's meant to be a cliffhanger, not a whole story! If you're not planning to read the upcoming book then skip this one.

I love Karen Slaughter, she is my favorite author. I especially like her Trent and Sarah series, of which I read the ebooks. Sadly, I do not really enjoy the narrators picked to read her stories on Audible, otherwise I would have gladly added Sarah's Grant County and Will Trent series my Audible Library.

It took me several days to finish Last Breath. I normally can listen to an 11 hours Audible in one day so this says something. By the end of the story, after I was introduced to the characters and used to the narration, I was sad it was over. It has left me eager to listen to The Good Daughter. I think there may be a good story ahead after all and hopefully the narration will do it justice.

Loved this book & the narrator

I will say I listen to all books at 1.25 speed, some at 1.5.
So, I cant really dispute anyone not liking the narrator but for me she is perfect and Ive listened to her narrations many many times and always enjoy the books as she reads them.

I had started listening to The Good Daughter and this popped up on my recommended list and I wondered why I hadn't seen it before but glad I was only on the 2nd chapter. I paused TGD and listened to Last Breath in one day while painting and immediately picked back up into TGD.
I think yes, it would be valuable to listen to LB 1st.

Karin couldn't fail if she tried - narrator ... not so much

Karin is my favorite storyteller. I just wish the publisher would get a different narrator for her books. First works had Judith Ivey and Patricia Kalembar who were both great. In trying to add drama to the story, Early constantly adds awkward hesitations, as if she's lost her place. Reads like an automaton. Doesn't do justice to the books.
