Publisher's summary
When you're learning a new language, a cognate is an easy word to remember because it looks and means the same thing as a word you already know. For example, “accent” in English means the same as “akzent” in German.
A word is cognate with another if both derive from the same word in an ancestral language. In the case both coming from the Latin word “accentus”, meaning "tone, signal or intensity".
Focus your English learning on the most frequently used cognates. Learn what you already know.
One of the usual mistakes when learning a foreign language is that the student has no priorities. All the unknown words get the same attention. It makes a lot of sense to identify and focus your learning on the words you are already familiar with. In this book, you´ll find the list of the most used cognate words. Using an algorithm that provides the ranking, this book will provide you with the 100 most frequent cognate words you have to learn first to get around when traveling or interacting with English-speaking people.
The example phrases are presented in a very simple fashion. No complications. Straight and simple. So don’t waste your time and energy! Focus your effort on the most important cognates you have to learn to master your English!

Story
When Edward M. Hallowell was 11, a voice out of nowhere told him he should become a psychiatrist. A mental health professional of the time would have called this psychosis. But young Edward (Ned) took it in stride, despite not quite knowing what "psychiatrist" meant. With a psychotic father, an alcoholic mother, an abusive stepfather, and two so-called learning disabilities of his own, Ned was accustomed to unpredictable behaviour from those around him and to a mind he felt he couldn't always control.

Story
For hundreds of years, Bulgarian Gypsies trained bears to dance, welcoming them into their families and taking them on the road to perform. In the early 2000s, with the fall of Communism, they were forced to release the bears into a wildlife refuge. But even today, whenever the bears see a human, they still get up on their hind legs to dance. In the tradition of Ryszard Kapuściński, award-winning Polish journalist, Witold Szabłowski uncovers remarkable stories of people throughout Eastern Europe and in Cuba who, like Bulgaria’s dancing bears, are now free but who seem nostalgic for the time when they were not.

Story
It's exhausting being Irish. The constant self-flagellation is enough to put anybody off their breakfast. Why are we so hard on ourselves? Is it the postcolonial overhang following centuries of oppression at the hands of a litany of foreign invaders? Or is it collective guilt for sending Westlife out into the wider world? In Surviving Ireland, acclaimed comedy writer Colm Tobin takes the listener by the hand for a satirical romp through modern Irish life.

What do the lives of Lincoln, Helen Keller, Joan of Arc, and other historical figures have in common with Paula Poundstone? In the hands of this wryly observant and self-deprecating comedian, the answer is outrageously funny and unexpectedly touching. Poundstone compares her crazy life to theirs, as she holds forth on her children, her career, and the time in her life when it appeared she would lose them both.
