Publisher's summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author James Rollins, the latest riveting, deeply imaginative thriller in the Sigma Force series, told with his trademark blend of cutting-edge science, historical mystery, and pulse-pounding action.

It begins in Africa . . .

A United Nations relief team in a small village in the Congo makes an alarming discovery. An unknown force is leveling the evolutionary playing field. Men, women, and children have been reduced to a dull, catatonic state. The environment surrounding them—plants and animals—has grown more cunning and predatory, evolving at an exponential pace. The insidious phenomenon is spreading from a cursed site in the jungle — known to locals as the Kingdom of Bones —and sweeping across Africa, threatening the rest of the world.

What has made the biosphere run amok? Is it a natural event? Or more terrifyingly, did someone engineer it?

Commander Gray Pierce and Sigma Force are prepared for the extraordinary and have kept the world safe, vigilance for which they have paid a tragic personal price. Yet, even these brilliant and seasoned scientific warriors do not understand what is behind this frightening development—or know how to stop it. As they race to find answers, the members of Sigma quickly realize they have become the prey.

To head off global catastrophe, Sigma Force must risk their lives to uncover the shattering secret at the heart of the African continent—a truth that will illuminate who we are as a species and where we may be headed . . . sooner than we know.

Mother Nature—red in tooth and claw—is turning against humankind, propelling the entire world into the Kingdom of Bones.

Learned a lot about viruses and nature.

One of the best Books I have ever read. Even as a retired physician,I learned a lot about microorganisms and viruses from this book. Excellent story, great characters. Couldn’t put it down. Loved the mixing of historical non-fiction information and science in a fiction novel. Rollins is among the best.

Rollins at his Best!

This has been my favorite Rollins book since picking up “Amazonia” years ago. It’s a thrilling, fictional storyline with well-researched history, biology, ecology, zoology, and technology throughout. Rollins is superb at creating works that are both entertaining and mentally engaging as well.

Christian Baskous is an excellent narrator. He brings the characters to life, using pauses and voice inflections to heighten the suspense. I’ve enjoyed all of his dramatizations of Rollins’ previous books, but this is one of his best performances.

I’ll definitely be listening to this one again!

Very enjoyable and great ending - streak continues

Rollins continues his streak of finding new ways to bring closure to suspenseful plots. A lot of suspense adventure authors appear to have a hard time avoiding rushed endings where readers feel like they’re on a wild roller coaster that ends immediately after the biggest drop. Rollins knows how to bring the action down while piquing your intellect and heart.

Kingdom of Bones continues Rollins’s streak of exciting adventures that leave the reader thinking, reconsidering, and appreciating the world around them.

Indiana Jones meets Michael Crichton

Jungle adventure that takes local cultures as important, not as stick figures. Science based viral crisis (wait, that couldn't happen really, could it?). Wide cast of distinct characters. Well told tale. The narrator gave it the flavor of an old time movie somehow. Very well done.

Outstanding

I absolutely love this series and these characters. Perhaps I identify the most with Tucker, living dogs and knowing the heartbreaking loss that inevitably comes with that tight bond.

The setting is also fantastic, one that tends to be overlooked and ignored by the literary world, but which holds a deep and abiding fascination, with cultures that stretch back to the beginning of humanity itself.

And while it’s likely far too late to offer a name for the new puppy, I will still suggest Nikki, a German shepherd which we once had, but had to give up because of her innate hostility towards strangers. The last I heard, she was a fantastic drug sniffing police dog in Texas, living a wonderful life that we could never have given her.

Thank you for this wonderful story, as always narrated by the Outstanding Mr Baskous. He has given life to these people that so many have come to care about.
