A captivating story about a cops journey

Barbara Winkes has crafted a compelling novel about the costs of fighting sexual predators. she has created complex, nuanced characters and tortured them with impossible scenarios. The writing is crisp. The book is a page turner. The topics tough. The scenes just graphic enough. She carefully covers the lives of her characters.

If you read tgis type of book, then this one is worth your effort.

The narration by TJ Richards is articlate and matches the story perfectly.

Twisted and infused with love

This is a great read. I was hooked at the onset when the cop becomes a convicted murderer. It just gets more intense and incredible from there. To say anymore would necessitate spoilers so I encourage you to grab this novel and enjoy.

Killer Instinct

This is not your typical serial killer book. This is the first book by this author I've read, or listened to, and the first book I've listened to by the narrator. The writing in this book was well done. I didn't like the main character Joanna, and she just never grew on me. But, that is completely on me and nothing to do with the writer's writing. The narrator did a good job, but she had a lot of female characters to voice and there were times that those voices bled together making it hard for me to distinguish who was speaking. Otherwise, this was a good introduction to a new to me author and narrator! I'll look for more of their work!

Enjoyed this read

I enjoyed the escape into this story. I both enjoyed and missed some of the depth into the serial killers worls and suspense of characters in the throws of being with the serial killer. Even getting more depth from the side of the serial killer.

in general though. it was a wonderful experience to identify with the characters in a suspense novel. it was my first experience in doing so and now I thirst for more!

Amazing!

What a wonderful thriller/murder mystery this book turned out to be...Now I’m usually always hesitant when purchasing an audiobook just for the fact that I’m never sure if the narration will hamper the story in any way... Well I’m glad to say this wasn’t the case. TJ Richards does an outstanding job as the narrator. Which in turns kept me invested from beginning to end. As for the story and plot, it was no surprise to me how well it was written when I first read the book, but now listening to it really brings it to life. In the end, (spoilers) you kinda already know the Who when it comes to the murderers, but the motives and Why comes threw out the book as you delve into the puzzle to this particular plot. I truly believe your going to enjoy listening to the book wether you’ve read the book or not. Bravo to the Author and Narrator ... 5⭐️

Great story, excellent characters

Killer Instinct opens with a pretty traditional scene, where a woman escapes her killer. I don’t need the author to give me all the all the gory details to understand the killer is an awful person and I was happy to find that Barbara Winkes seems to be on the same page as me. In a few sentences, I got that this woman had just been through a very traumatic experience and was running for her life. It was just enough and the story could begin.

The most interesting part of the book is the main character, Joanna. She’s a former cop who had to spend a few years in prison for killing a serial killer in cold blood. She shares an unlikely friendship with the Internal Affairs inspector who sent her to jail at the time, Vanessa. What happened to the woman from the first scene reminds her of an old cold case. She can’t help getting involved, especially when her new lover Rue disappears.

I loved the relationships between Joanna and Vanessa on one hand and between Joanna and Rue on the other. Joanna’s internal struggles about the old case, the new one, the one that put an end to her career, all were absolutely captivating. TJ Richards’ narration was excellent, too.
