Publisher's Summary

The future holds all sorts of positive potential: technological advancement, increased life expectancy, improvements to society. But negative possibilities exist, too. Perhaps the worst of these is the arrival of an alien race - not just any alien race, but a hostile one intent on conquering humankind.

Hugh McDaniel lives in Queens, New York. He's a genius, and he has been struggling to pick one area to focus his life’s work on. His brother and best friend, Travis, is a marine officer. They get along very well, despite their differences. When aliens suddenly invade and destroy their entire culture, they are forced to struggle together in the ruins.

At first they just tried to survive; to collect food, medicine, weapons, and to find other survivors. But now, they've set their sights higher: on resistance and reclaiming their planet from invaders.

The enemy doesn't remain silent for long, and they start sending missions into the ruins, to gather humans and carry them off to unknown places with an unknown purpose. Hugh and Travis lead a constant battle against them; a fight against the enemy that will not end, that cannot end, until only one side remains. But Hugh has a forlorn plan: a way to, just maybe, defeat the impending massive assault on the humans of New York.

While Hugh frantically prepares his crazed operation, Travis leads the desperate mission to find the enemy and discover what they really want. And when he does, it is more terrible than anything he had ever imagined. He must return home to bring the news that the engagement between humans and aliens is absolutely a fight to the finish and that surrender isn’t even a possibility. But will he even have a home to return to?

Disappointing

I seldom find the need to warn away listeners, especially from Bray narrated works, but this book is painful to listen to.

This whole story could've been consolidated into maybe 2 hours of narration, but its so repetitious that its unbearable, and ultimately unbelievable. I kept listening hoping for it to improve, but in the end its a miserable slog through awkward storytelling with no satisfaction at its conclusion.

Repetitive

This is the most awkward and drawn out repetitive book I think I’ve ever listen to. RC Bray is amazing as always And I know he tried to breathe life into the story but it’s just too repetitive. I couldn’t finish the book.

I can not listen to how smart Hugh is anymore. This author's older work is phenomenal. Not sure what happened.

Really bad ...

I'm a big fan of RC Bray's narration and really disappointed that he lent his talents to such a poor book.

Nice try, maybe next time.

HOOOLLLLLYYYY CRAAAAPPPP! This book repeats A LOT! like the same phrase or thought just a few words apart.
The dialogue. I mean can I get a contraction there Commander Data? I under stand genius boy not using any, the Aliens sure, the president okay, but a Marine Lt I don't think so.
Why is everyone such a defeatest. " We will fight to the last, we suck and are all gonna die but we will fight" . why don't the characters just suck start a pistol? Cause I am following the guy that is ready to cut fence and sort some m fers out.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't reading notes from individual people mean that humans survived if not one. I mean you have established that the Aliens don't care about us. So if someone is compiling notes from key individuals to form a history of events then obviously there humans.

Mr. Bray,
Awesome performance sir!

I don't know how to describe this work

It was so amateurish that I thought it was written by a first timer.
What are heavy weapons, who uses bazookas anymore?. Did he do any research for a more realistic story?
This could have been better with a little bit of research and an editor.

Disappointing

I’m not one to right reviews, but this book deserves a waste of time disclaimer.

I’m a fan of RC Bray and he did his best to make this book interesting, but the poor guy can’t get around poor writing and zero knowledge displayed by the author.

First off, this was written with a fifth grade level of writing. The disjointed jumping between the brother characters is distracting at the least.

It seemed that author REALLY wanted you to know our hero is the smartest person, ever. The repetition of how smart he is became mighty old mighty fast.

And I don’t know in what universe a United States Marine Corps Platoon Leader and his buddy Lieutenant can go to Queens, NY with their service weapons they brought from Camp Lejeune. It’s no known universe I’m aware of that a Marine, much less a line unit commander, can just check out their service weapon to take home, to New York the land of heavy firearms restrictions of all places.

Little forethought was put into this book. It was an utter disappointment and waste of time. And it so happened I was a captive audience on a long road trip. Needless to say, I would have rather sat in silence.

It's a magazine not a clip!!!

For the love of all that is holy and just, it's a magazine not a clip. A good solid story with very solid characters that are well developed. R C. Bray is a genius as usual. I will grab the sequel as long as people are putting magazines in their rifles.

Get an Editor.

1Hugh was clever. Very clever. Hugh knew he was clever. Very clever. Travis (sometimes Tyler) is Hugh's brother. Travis (or Tyler) is clever, but not as clever Hugh, because Hugh is intelligent. Very intelligent.
He is also 19 and knows how to repair nuclear bombs and everyone thinks he's great because he's clever. Very clever.

As ever, Jay write a fairly good story but repeats himself so often that you just end up rolling your eyes when certain phrases are repeated. He knew. He was almost certain. He was clever. Very clever.

RC Bray as always brings the story to life. RC Bray is good. Very good.

Disappointed

The amount of repartition spoilt the story. The only good thing was the narrator RC Bray. It was like they were telling a story to an Alzheimer’s patient. Thankfully this was a book included in my memberships for I didn’t cost me anything . It’s a shame because I normally follow a series through the years, but this time I was grateful it ended!

It reads like a first draft

I don't know if this book was reviewed by an editor before publication, it doesn't seem to be the case as it reads like a first draft. The plot lines are occasionally very thin and there's a lot - s lot - of repetition.

The concept is good and entertaining but it could have been so much better if a bit of extra effort had been put in. I hope the sequel benefits from this.

Not even the great R C Bray could totally rescue this

Expected this to be much better!

Was surprised to struggle with this as the writer's old works were enjoyable. The plot and characters were seriously unrealistic. Will not be continuing the series. Even RC Bray couldn't save this :l

A good story desperately in need of editing

Repeats itself over and over. To many needless interruptions to the flow. Action scenes don’t flow as well as they could due to needlessly adding too many perspectives. A good story and concept.

repetition, repetition, repetition...

got this title as its narated by the great RC Bray, a good omen you would think, and indeed Bray is brilliant but let down by an average story line made worse by poor writing. That they had to survive, there would be a fight, that the main protagonist was a genious/bright/intelligent was repeated in just about every paragraph. Likewise every plot line and event was equally reiterated time and time again to the absolute detriment of the story which in itself had nothing new or exciting to add to the genre.

All in all a waste of a credit and one of the few I could not finish.

great narration, poor storyline

The story had so many holes you could drive a truck through. I've often wondered why America has a military when a couple of hundred untrained citizens can outdo aliens when the military has collapsed. Firing huge amounts of bullets at robots when they have a supply of bazookas and shoulder fired missiles. R C Bray excellent as always but by the end I didn't care if they won or not.
