Resumen del Editor

Michael Valentine, veteran and former member of an elite private military company, has been recruited by the government to conduct a secret counter-terror operation in the Persian Gulf nation of Zubara. The unit is called Dead Six. Their mission is to take the fight to the enemy and not get caught. Lorenzo, assassin and thief extraordinaire, is being blackmailed by the world's most vicious crime lord. His team has to infiltrate the Zubaran terrorist network and pull off an impossible heist or his family will die. When Dead Six compromises his objective, Lorenzo has a new job: Find and kill Valentine. As allegiances are betrayed and the nation descends into a bloody civil war, Lorenzo and Valentine must face off. Two men. Two missions. Only one will win.

Little hard to follow

This story is well written but is a little hard to follow listening to. This is especially true at the end where the two main characters (both written in the first person) converse quite a bit.

Bronson Pinchot does a very good job though and is very entertaining especially when performing the villain.

Characters that are very hard to like

Having read other works by Larry Correia, I expected anti-government rhetoric, machismo, and detailed descriptions of weapons, but this book brought in a new element, and that was a group of protagonists so despicable that you wanted them to get killed as much as the bad guys. Having a hero that is tainted is not a new concept, but in this case, mercenaries with a history of murder, extortion, and war crimes made it hard to cheer on the main characters.

The narration was also a bit odd. It took a while for me to understand the method being used by Mr. Pinochet. Over all though, I felt it could have been read at a faster pace.

In summary, the book did entertain me and it wasn't a wasted credit. I would place this in the middle of the "to read" list if you enjoy Larry Correia's other works.

Lots of killing!

Two parallel stories that confused me at first. for about a third of the book! I thought one of the stories was a flash back. The two main characters were very similar in personality and how the narrator voiced them.

The story had lots of shooting but for the most part the characters survived by there skill and not just dumb luck. I recommend this for those that like special forces stories.

Second half of story is excellent, first not so

The story is as expected when Larry Correia is involved - Guns, explosions and a big military nut WHO is more intelligent than expected.

... but somehow it starts all wrong. It does not quite connect until Lorenzo and Valentine meet for the first time, from then on the story is exciting, fun and full of all that I love about the stories written by Larry.

The narration is more than just good. He is able to do all the voices, and really apply depth to all of the characters. Even though I felt 'meh' about the story I have invested in book two - all because of the second part and the narration.

Overall good listen/read.

narrator didn't work for me

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

i liked the plot. but the reader has very unusual inflections and delivery for the material. distracting, ruined it for me.

Who was your favorite character and why?

liked both protagonists

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bronson Pinchot?

someone else

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Always enjoyable with Larry Correia and Pinchot

A great action fiction that keeps you engaged the whole way through! Do yourself a favor and pick this up, both writer and narrator are top notch.

Best narration ever

When I'm looking for a book by an author I'm not familiar with, I go for longer books. This is 20 hours, which covers a lot of miles for the price. The story is about a close knit group of extra talented soldiers who end up being unhappy with the people that hired them. Relationships change and are challenged. There is violence, explosions, and narrow escapes. A dozen authors do the same plot better.

What stands out is the narration. I knew of Bronson Pinchot as tv ' s Balki. You would swear that the narration was performed by an ensemble of men and women. The characters are distinct, and not just variations of one another. I am sure to listen to other books read by Bronson Pinchot.

Good plot, too political, another Mary Sue story

I liked the story and the performance. The plot was not too predictable, and Bronson Pinchot has one of those calm whispery voices that work well with stories like these. This recording reminded me of Grimnoir Chronicles.

However, as the book progressed, I grew more and more tired of the characters. They didn't develop in the story so much as the reader learned more about their pasts. They did develop some in the story, but not much.

The biggest issue I had with this story was it's clear alt-right leaning. I do not like partizan politics, and I don't like reading about partizan politics in my audiobooks. The main characters spent 90% of the book in an Islamic country, but not even once was there a reference to a good Muslim character. They were all "terrorists." The characters were all apparently pro-NRA, and they all hated the "deep state." They did not care much about civilian casualties. There was not even one mention of them trying to help save the innocent lives of the "human shields" that they had "no choice" but to shoot. Evidently, terrorists cross the Mexican boarder into America with RPGs on a regular basis. The main non-white character in the story was adopted into a family of white people. He was, predictably, the "black sheep" of the family.

Mike Kupari clearly wrote his idealized self into the story. Yes, unfortunately, this is yet another Mary Sue story.

On the bright side, the military references were accurate (if a bit too obvious, like the authors were trying to prove they knew what they were talking about). Kupari's influence again I think.
