Acerca de esta escucha
An inspirational manifesto for re-igniting our passion for life and our inner drive from Sharath Jeevan, a leading expert on motivation.
We are in a motivational mess today.
Many of us feel like we are going through the motions - as workers, managers, spouses and partners, parents and citizens. We feel jaded and unhappy with the organisations we are part of, whether that's the company we work for or our child's school. And some of us feel deeply alienated from the wider societies in which we live, particularly in the face of vast social problems - from climate change to our increasingly 'winner takes all' world.
But life doesn't need to be this way. Motivation thinking holds the key to this promise. Intrinsic uses motivation thinking not just to accurately diagnose these problems but to find solutions. As a leading expert on motivation, Sharath Jeevan helps us see how we can achieve more lasting fulfilment and success in our work, careers, relationships, parenting and as citizens.
Jeevan applies the concepts of purpose (how what we do helps others), autonomy (our ability to positively change things) and mastery (our sense of continually getting better) to help us see our motivation in these key life areas in a radically new light.
Jeevan takes us on a journey around the world to find practical and inspirational answers to solving our motivational crisis, harnessing groundbreaking research, from psychology and economics to philosophy and behavioural science.
Intrinsic shows us how we can fall back in love with our lives and create the lives we want.

It is the sound of people reaching out to each other, searching for similarities, shared interests, goodwill, connections, and friendship. And it’s something we all do every day with people we know. It’s just the one little bit about strangers that throws some people off. Graceful social conversation can be learned, even by those requiring the smallest of baby steps.

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

Neurological research definitively and repeatedly concludes that there is a bottleneck in our cognitive function - when we do more than one thing at a time, we become less efficient and more error‑prone. Our systems get overloaded and we crash. In fact, we are actually wired to monotask - to give dedicated focus to one task at a time. Whether you call it monotasking, mindfulness, being present, or any other name, the goal is the same: Give your focus to one thing at a time and do it with your all.

In Joel's Schwartzberg's 10-plus years as a strategic communications trainer, the biggest obstacle he's come across - one that connects directly to nervousness, stammering, rambling, and epic fail - is that most speakers and writers don't have a point. They typically have just a title, a theme, a topic, an idea, an assertion, a catchphrase, or even something much less. This book shows you how to identify your point, leverage it, stick to it, and sell it and how to train others to identify and successfully make their own points.

Intrinsic - a book for everyone
Sharath Jeevan’s “Intrinsic: A Manifesto to Reignite Our Inner Drive” is a thought-provoking book exploring the impact of intrinsic motivation on our lives.
This book contains many well-written and riveting parts, including a social entrepreneurial case study, an autobiography, a searching inquiry into the state of the global education system, the British healthcare system, and a warning to citizens and governments in the West where there is no sense of national purpose.
As an HR professional, a manager in an enterprise, or a parent of school-aged children, it is essential to understand the significance of intrinsic motivation and how it can be harnessed to drive engagement and productivity in employees or students.
Intrinsic Definition
Intrinsic motivation is the motivation to engage in a behaviour because of the inherent satisfaction of the activity rather than the desire for a reward or specific outcome
Jeevan argues that intrinsic motivation is the key to unlocking our inner drive and achieving success in all aspects of our lives.
Intrinsic Motivation in Sales
Intrinsic motivation is the #1 quality we look for in aspiring salespeople. The commissions salespeople earn are extrinsic motivators and not what drives the best salespeople, they are merely hygiene factors.
He identifies three key components of intrinsic motivation: purpose, autonomy, and mastery.
Purpose
Purpose refers to our sense that what we do helps and serves others. Jeevan argues that a sense of purpose is essential in achieving intrinsic motivation.
When we have a clear sense of purpose, we are more likely to be engaged and motivated in our work.
Purpose gives us a reason to get up in the morning and work towards something meaningful. It helps us stay focused and committed to our goals, even when faced with challenges and setbacks.
By aligning our work with our sense of purpose, we can create a culture of intrinsic motivation that drives employee engagement and productivity.
Autonomy
Jeevan illustrates the consequences of a lack of autonomy in Western education and the British healthcare system.
He argues that the traditional education system in the West and many parts of the world is designed to achieve test benchmarks.
Teachers teach children to achieve test results via rote learning instead of encouraging students to think, engage, interact, and play in their critical primary school years.
They are stifled creatively by “helicopter” and “snowplough” parents who try to remove all obstacles in front of their children instead of letting them struggle and experience the frustrations and the rewards of their efforts that form character in later years.
Jeevan’s social entrepreneurial teaching experiment in India has sparked a movement among hundreds of thousands of teachers who previously had lost the motivation to teach because of stifling rules and regulations and achieving target test results.
This lack of autonomy in teachers is almost certainly a demotivator. It is passed on directly, leading to student disengagement, poor academic performance and low self-esteem.
Similarly, the British NHS (National Healthcare System) is plagued by a lack of autonomy, with doctors and nurses often powerless to make decisions that are in the best interests of their patients.
This is due to NHS bureaucracy, where in many cases, NHS Trusts are funded and run by bean counters, not qualified medical professionals. This can lead to a lack of trust between healthcare professionals and patients, resulting in poorer health outcomes and low patient satisfaction.
Mastery
Mastery refers to our sense of developing into the best versions of ourselves. Jeevan argues that mastery is essential for personal growth.
Encouraging children to read and employees to become lifelong learners is a great way to foster mastery.
Reading helps children develop cognitive abilities, improves vocabulary, and enhances creativity.
Similarly, lifelong learning helps employees develop new skills, stay updated with industry trends, and adapt to rapidly changing work environments.
By encouraging children to read and employees to become lifelong learners, we can foster a culture of mastery that drives personal growth and a growth mindset.
Summary
Jeevan’s book provides valuable insights into how intrinsic motivation can be harnessed to drive employee engagement and productivity in the workplace.
This can be achieved by providing employees with opportunities to develop their skills, encouraging them to take ownership of their work, and aligning their work with the organisation’s mission and values.
In conclusion, Sharath Jeevan’s book “Intrinsic: A Manifesto to Reignite Our Inner Drive” is a must-read for HR professionals, people managers and parents.
Organisations can drive engagement and productivity by fostering a culture of intrinsic motivation in education, the workplace, and our healthcare systems, resulting in improved outcomes and increased satisfaction.
