Zeke and his friends have a final few obstacles standing in their way before they can try and find a way into the Hells. Everything to this point has been an effort to rescue their buddy, Balmur. Balmur has been rescued, and War has lost one of his powerhouses. What more could Zeke and his team want? Taking the time to train and rearm themselves seems like a great idea now that they are all back together, but nothing is ever that easy. An unexpected ‘guest’ puts the growing village of Sunrise in danger, but the uneasy alliance that grows allows the group to start tracking the location of another General. Royal negotiations, his growing relationship with a certain Fae Queen, and the threat of the Drow - seems like Zeke and the crew have their work cut out for them.

Story
The Nelsons have grown in just about every way since being exiled to Eloria. Now they will face their biggest challenge yet. For all that they thought they had begun to understand what faced them, it has now become apparent that there are larger forces at work and more powerful enemies behind the scenes. The monstrous dark mage Seimion seems almost unstoppable with a host of fiends at his command and behind him is the mysterious Master. If they are to save not only their home but the very kingdom of Albia from utter chaos, all of the Nelson's will be required.

A lot had changed in "The Holy Sky" School during the six weeks that Hadjar Darkhan was away. Everyone who was in the capital at the time became much stronger, thanks to the regular skirmishes along the Imperial road. By the emperor's decree, all the disciples of the Imperial martial arts schools were allowed to visit the infamous and highly coveted Wastelands. "The Holy Sky's" disciples were especially fortunate - they'd been given a two-week head start to find the map leading to Emperor Decater's tomb, as well as the key that would allow them to enter his chambers.

Publisher's Summary
Leveling up. Fighting death. Living life to the max.
Zeke and his comrades have only been in Brindolla, their new world, for a short time, but every minute has been amazing. Kicking butt and not bothering to take names, the group has been moving forward in their quest to push back War, the galactic tyrant.
Then the unthinkable happens: Their friend is banished to the darkest Hells. Poof! Gone...just like that.
Now, not only are they on a quest to stop the vanguard of War, but they are going to need to get stronger, faster, and better than ever before if they want to have any hope of busting into the Hells and getting their friend back.
The Brindollan Gods plan to help as much as they can, but will it be enough to allow them to complete a task that even Orpheus in Earth's mythology couldn’t?
With the odds looking bleak and the world they’re trying to defend turning against them, they’re going to need to seek help from unlikely spaces, travel to new places, and break some faces.

I love these books. They do a great job with ability progression without listing a character sheet every two minutes. The banter between everyone is arguably my favorite part. You can tell the characters in the story have all been friends for years and it shows.

HURRY UP WITH BOOK 3!!
Not gonna lie, I completely binged books 1 and 2 of this series. I would go so far as to say the Axe Druid series is firmly planted on the top of my list of favorite series. While there are some trivial tropes as found in other LitRPG series, Christopher Johns did not shove them down your throat the way some other authors do. I know I shouldn't hold my breath for book 3, but I am completely hooked on this series.

Another enjoyable instalment in this series
This is not the ideal starting point to the series, but the first book is also an enjoyable one, so I would recommend people try that one first before this one.
This instalment in the series works well to build on the strong start of the first, with a good rate of progression in the main characters and their skills, while also elevating the challenges they have to face in the process, helping to further flesh out the world of this series.
The narrator's performance maintains the high standard set in the first book with a wide range of tones and voices to bring the increasing cast to life.
Overall, a strong follow-up to the first book and one that drew me further into the series very effectively.
