Disappointed with this standalone, especially when the Daughter of the Moon Goddess duology was INCREDIBLE. This book is set in the same world as the duology but focuses on FMC mortal ruler, Liyen, and the MMC immortal god of war, Zhangwei….. essentially, their relationship felt super rushed, with big feelings and declarations after like…. 2 days? The world building was still very elaborate, but it felt overshadowed by the drama surrounding (imo) low-stakes betrayals and weird pacing. It took nearly 75% of the book to understand what the point of the first 74% was and then the ending was so action packed but I felt no connection with the fate of the characters.

Beautiful Story with Slow Start

I’m glad I stuck with this book because it was getting fairly iffy there for a minute. I enjoyed the beginning but then found the FMC (Liyen) extremely annoying and petulant — while, unbelievably, the MMC seemed to be in love with her. However, at about 75% of the way into the book, things started happening and pieces were coming together. A lot of this redeemed the tedious middle of the story and I ended up being glad that I read it. I did like Sue Lynn Tan’s writing style and would definitely read another book by this author.

Good

I like that this book took place in the same world as the moon goddess book. I’m glad I read that one first because it helped me understand the golden desert and the immortals. I really liked the FMC and the MMFC. The only thing I did not like about this book is it seemed like it was longer than it needed to be and sometimes when I thought the book was done, it would start another chapter.

Cute romantic fantasy

I enjoyed listening to this book. The story is not a complex one. It is also not too simple. I like that about it. It is unique in that she is given w choice to make, and she chooses neither, creating a third option. I won't spoil it! I think the main characters had grewt chemistry and I loved reading about them. Her learning to trust. Him going to the ends of the earth to be with her. What a lovely romantic fantasy.

Perfect pairing of Story and Narrator

I already love this Author but hearing the Audiobook was a whole new experience. the vivid storytelling with a different voice for each character. it was emotional and exciting. the story was already captivating added with a amazing Narrator really sent this over the edge!

Excellent story telling!

I love Natalie, she is great at story telling! The story itself was good although nothing compared to Daughter of the Moon Goddess. Still a good read for those who enjoy romance, magic and immortality incorporations!

Beautiful Book

I’ve never loved a fantasy book as much as I grew to love Immortal. I loved everything about the characters, the storyline, the plot twists, and the beautiful writing. I hung on to every word I read. I will forever remember this book and so glad I was able to get past the first few chapters that were a little slower than I expected. 5 out of 5!

Pretty Good

This was very good for a fast read. Not a ton of world building and the beginning is hard to get through but it picks up speed by the middle

Entertaining, magical read!

I enjoyed this! This one felt a bit fairy tale-esque which I enjoyed. I liked all the characters, and I enjoyed the romance overall. My two main complaints is that 1) the struggles the character went through didn't feel like she earned the conclusions she arrived at. It just felt like the emotional turmoil she went though was often easily resolved with some quick reflection on her part. I imagine because this is a standalone novel, you have to get so much within so many pages. But there was sooo much happening, that it felt like her triumphs were inevitable and she didn't really have to fight for them.

2) This goes along with the first one- I wish we got to marinate with some elements more. The relationships, the pain and anguish, it just all felt like it went very quickly.

The writing was very beautiful, which is very on brand for Sue Lynn Tan. The writing I think makes up for a lot of my complaints actually. If the writing wasn't so strong, I think these other elements would have bothered me more.

Really enjoyed this one though, and will continue to read Ms. Tan!
