Publisher's Summary

Let’s start your restaurant legacy right now, right here!

National chains and single independent restaurants all started with an individual and an idea. A concept. A dream.

Small ideas can grow into big business. Who would have thought that a guy with a milkshake machine could start a hamburger empire? A pizza made in a garage would start today’s pizza wars? A guy with a pressure-cooker would start a fried chicken phenomena?

Business ownership has always been part of the all-American dream. Restaurants are the largest entrepreneurial opportunity in America for starting the dream.

According to Restaraunt.org, the industry stands as follows:

  • $799 billion: Restaurant industry sales.
  • 1 million+: Restaurant locations in the United States.
  • 14.7 million: Restaurant industry employees.
  • 1.6 million: New restaurant jobs created by the year 2027.
  • 10%: Restaurant workforce as part of the overall U.S. workforce.
  • 9 in 10: Restaurant managers who started at entry level.
  • 8 in 10: Restaurant owners who started their industry careers in entry-level positions.
  • 9 in 10: Restaurants with fewer than 50 employees.
  • 7 in 10: Restaurants that are single-unit operations.

In this book, you will realize why your concept and theme are critical. Factors to include in a business plan. How to start your restaurant, how to grow and how to be successful. It is a detail guide that will guide you through the process.

Very general information

Listened to the complete book. If you are looking for general concepts about running a restaurant, this book will fill that. If you are looking for tips and tricks or methods to actually run your business, this is not the book for you.

Great for Business Awareness.

This audiobook was perfect for lighting the path of a restaurant entrepreneur. How many times have i heard it’s difficult or not profitable to open a restaurant? 100+. But this book lets you know why! If after you’re done listening to this and still have the courage and discipline to follow it’s advice and create your own plan then you are in the right industry. Thank you for not sugar coating Dan! A real book for real business people.

Nothing about Lean Startup

Although the book is a great summary of all the information you will need to start a restaurant, it is light on the “run” and “grow” part of it. This is ideal for those considering starting a restaurant. If you are already involved in the industry, only the finance part of it might be helpful. I was hoping for more info about Lean Startup principles, but he only mentioned pop-ups and food carts as ways to test the market, with little detail about how to do that. Instead of “a lean startup guide”, the title should be called “a beginner guide”

review from someone in uk

This book has some good advice, what's stopping me from giving it 5 stars is that some of the rules are only for people living in US.

Having said that it is a very good book to get you started. Gets you thinking in the most important parts of starting a restaurant

I personally got ths most value at the end of the book where he talks about marketing, pricing strategy and menu

Definitely worth reading!

It doesn’t necessarily go into great detail, but it covers all of the essential areas that will need attention. It’s one of many books I’m reading before I start up.
