The Instant New York Times Best Seller

One of USA Today's Best Books of 2020

“A haunted house story - with a twist.... [Sager] does not hold back” (Rolling Stone) in this chilling thriller from the author of Final Girls and Survive the Night.

Every house has a story to tell and a secret to share.

Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal her father recounted in a memoir called House of Horrors. His story of supernatural happenings and malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity - and skepticism.

Maggie was too young to remember any of the horrific events that supposedly took place, and as an adult she doesn’t believe a word of her father’s claims. Ghosts, after all, don’t exist. When she inherits Baneberry Hall after his death and returns to renovate the place and sell it, her homecoming is anything but warm. The locals aren’t thrilled that their small town has been made infamous, and human characters with starring roles in House of Horrors are waiting in the shadows.

Even more unnerving is Baneberry Hall itself - a place where unsettling whispers of the past lurk around every corner. And as Maggie starts to experience strange occurrences ripped from the pages of her father’s book, the truth she uncovers about the house’s dark history will challenge everything she believes.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"What could be better than a haunted house with ghosts aplenty? Home Before Dark is equally superb and terrifying. Buckle up for a wild ride. This book should come with a warning not to be read after dark." (Mary Kubica, New York Times best-selling author of The Other Mrs.)

"Flawless pacing, a dexterous dual narrative, and character through the roof. But the biggest revelation to be found in Home Before Dark is this: There's nobody writing scarier books than Riley Sager is right now." (Josh Malerman, New York Times best-selling author of Bird Box and Malorie)

"Houses breathe. Some have a heartbeat. None forget. Grabbing you from the first page, Riley Sager crafts a devilish plot, twisted timelines, and horrors that linger in this haunting thriller that needs to be on your reading list!" (J.D. Barker, international best-selling author of She Has a Broken Thing Where Her Heart Should Be)

Unexpected Plot Twists • Engaging Dual Narrative • Excellent Writing • Suspenseful Storytelling • Well-crafted Mystery

This was the craziest story I've ever heard and had no clue I needed. Woooow. Riley Sager - although I haven't been the biggest fan of your last two books, I still listen to everything you put out. Why? Because "Final Girls" was the one of the first books I devoured that got me into this genre I so now love. Albeit a physical copy of the book I read then (before I found my love for Audible), 300+ audiobooks later, and I'm in shivers for the first time listening to one!!! And oh boy, I'm so glad it was from you Riley Sager!!! This book was gripping, it was shocking, it was scary as heck and bloody great. Thank you for the scares and thank you for the second book of yours I love.

Oh my Goodness. Shivers near the end.

I put off reading this book for a while, even though it was on a bunch of to-read lists, since Halloween is coming up. When I finally started it, I couldn’t stop. The story has an essence of Gillian Flynn combined with the macabre and horror of other writers. Now, I can’t say that this book is anywhere as good as Flynn’s other books, but it had me captivated in a way very few books like ‘Gone Girl’ and her other two books did.

‘Home Before Dark’ is the story of Maggie and Ewan Holt, the former taking place in the present and the latter twenty-five years prior. Maggie’s whole life has been defined by her father’s nonfiction account of what happened in the twenty days they spent living inside Baneberry Hall. In the book, a fantastical, uncanny tale is woven of apparitions, doors opening, record players playing by themselves, and more. Maggie has no memory of her time in the house, has never believed a word of the story, and holds a giant grudge for her parents lying to her and never telling her the truth. After her father passes, she realizes that Ewan has held onto the house, for reasons beyond her comprehension, and she intends to restore and sell it, since that is what she does for a living. The real reason she is going is completely different, though; she wants to find out the truth about what happened twenty-five years ago and she will not stop until she discovers it, no matter the cost.

This is the first book by Riley Sager that I’ve read and I plan on reading his other books in the near future. Like I mentioned, it has a reminiscent feel of Gillian Flynn, with a near-flawless interweaving of perspectives and a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. The prose is nicely done and the book definitely deserves the notoriety it has been receiving by being on all the lists it has been on. It also adds a layer of horror and fantastical storyline that is not present in the typical psychological thriller novel. So, I would classify this as psychological thriller with a mix of good horror.

Both narrators did a great job and get an A- on my grading scale. The book itself will receive an A- and will probably be in the top ten favorite reads of the year!

This book hooked me from chapter one. There was so much build up through out the book the ending did not measure up and fell flat. Riley Sager's other book were much darker but this was a good old fashioned ghost story overall I enjoyed it.

Great book! Lame ending!

The pacing of this book really keeps the tension high throughout the entire story. It leaves you on the edge of your seat as it switches between the past and present. If you’re looking for a good thriller, this is it!

Definitely Worth a Read

The story is so well written and unfolds at just the right pace. The surprises are so unexpected (well, maybe one I thought might occur) that I would hate to push pause for any length of time.

Don’t Push Pause

This story could have been much scarier and more intense had the female narrator been more serious and less sardonic throughout. Very much a genre piece, this book was predictable and lacked emotional arc, largely due to narration.

Narrator tanked a mediocre story
