It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. It’s the house of their dreams. Their breathtaking new home sits on more than forty acres of meadow, aspen trees, and pine forest in the Teton Valley. Story
Years ago, the SS Arcadia vanished without a trace during a routine voyage. Though a garbled emergency message was broadcast, neither the ship nor any of its crew could be found. Sixty years later, its wreck has finally been discovered more than 300 miles from its intended course...a silent graveyard deep beneath the ocean's surface. Cove and her dive team have been granted permission to explore the Arcadia's rusting hull. Their purpose is straightforward: examine the wreck, film everything, and, if possible, uncover how and why the supposedly unsinkable ship vanished.

Publisher's Summary
A dark psychological thriller set in a Victorian asylum in the heart of Wales.
Warning - contains highly disturbing material!
It's 1893, and 19-year-old Flora George is admitted to a remote asylum with no idea why she is there, what happened to her child, or how her wealthy family could have abandoned her to such a fate. However, within a short space of time, it becomes apparent she must save herself from something far worse than that of a harsh regime.
It's 2018, and 41-year-old Isobel Lee moves into the gatehouse of what was once the old asylum. A reluctant medium, it is with dismay she realizes there is a terrible secret here - one desperate to be heard. Angry and upset, Isobel balks at what she must now face. But with the help of local dark-arts practitioner Branwen, face it she must.
This is a dark story of human cruelty, folklore, and superstition. But the human spirit can and will prevail...unless of course, the wrath of the fae is incited.

Frustrating in a good way
I really liked this book. It was supernatural in a pagan, wood fairy kind of way and included inter weaving stories from different times. The situations of the two main characters were very frustrating at times but it tied together in the end. It is worth the listen if you like period pieces, pagan lore, and complex stories.

Edge of the seat stuff
it only took a couple of days to get through this; the story never letting up from start to finish.
This was my first book by this author, I just don't know how I've missed her work until now. Certainly I'll be off to get more.
I was also pleased with the narration. Usually I speed it up to match more to my reading suited, but I found the standard speed here to be just perfect.
if you're after a scary, fast-paced horror story, you'd be wise to stop here and give this I've a go

Irritating narrator
If you have already been infuriated by the stupid voices in the Betty Church series don’t go near this book. The over acted babyish tremulous voice of the narrator made it impossible to finish or even care about the ending of this book. She also seems to forget who she is wobbling on about as she seems to apply it to more than one player depicting the personality of a wet fish very well. Refund thanks, shame really as I think - when not distracted by the quavering voices - the story is ok.

More needed from the final scenes!
I found the first approximate two thirds of this book to be absolutely compelling and listened to this book as quickly as possible. The story of Flora is horrific and I felt such sympathy for her and on occasions even had tears in my eyes. Her final scene is terrible indeed. Unfortunately for me, the author failed to sustain similarly high levels of dramatic tension in Isobel’s part of the story, leaving me with too many questions. What happens, for example to the Fox-Whateley’s and to the villagers? What about Flora’s revenge mentioned earlier on in the story? It was all over too quickly and seemed almost unfinished. Is there going to be a sequel perhaps?

Gripping, right up until the end
This story cleverly weaves the events in a Victorian asylum in rural Wales, with the story of a somewhat disturbed psychic woman who comes to live in the same building in modern times. The asylum story is all too plausible, but the modern-day characters and events are less compelling. Once the dark secrets had been revealed, I thought the story kind of fizzled out. I didn't listen to the last twenty minutes, and I don't feel I lost out.
I found the narrator a bit too fraught and stressed. Of courses, she's telling a fraught, stressed story, so this is appropriate. Still, it gets a bit tiring after a while. Despite what other reviewers have said, the narrator's pronunciation of Welsh words seemed plausible to me. I'm not a Welsh speaker, but I spent some time working in rural South Wales, and I recognized the Welsh words perfectly well. I don't know many English people who would do better.
All in all, despite the slightly weak ending, a good read/listen.
Incidentally, Audible lists the author as "SE England" and "Sarah England", so finding other works by the same author isn't entirely straightforward.

A wonderfully addictive dark gothic creepy read
Having read the Father Of Lies trilogy by Sarah England, thus quickly making her one of my favourite authors, I was excited to get going with this book. Ordinarily, I love the physical aspect of reading an actual paperback, to me, that is part of the magic. However I spend a lot of time out walking my dog and opted to get this in audiobook form. It's always a concern that the narrator may be annoying, or incongruent to the characters - but this narrator portrayed the characters brilliantly!
The settings, the characters, the plot fit together perfectly well, making you want to continue chapter after chapter! The author is obviously well researched, and isn't afraid to reach into the darkest corners of our psyche. Terrifying, and genius! LOVED it!! Highly recommended! Roll on Monkspike!!

Good story ruined by terrible narration
I’m enjoying the story line, but not sure I’ll be able to finish due to the terrible simpering narrator; It’s so distracting it just ruins an otherwise good book. When I listened to the sample, the character was a slightly precious 19yr old from the C19, so it didn’t seem so ill fitting to have a simpering voice playing the part, but gracious the ‘modern’ female character doesn’t fit the voice at all, The attempt at Welsh is just as appalling, she dives between a ridiculous Welsh then broad west country accent. Her over emphasised ‘cut glass’ English narration is also a difficult listen as it feels she’s acting and not telling a story (fine if she’s playing a character not fine when being a narrator), But really it’s the very ‘girly’/ high pitched’ slightly breathy, simpering voice throughout the story that is as irritating as a wasp at a picnic. .
I think the narrator would have been much more suited for Jane Austen or similar but not a thriller.

Story
Next to the colonial town of Essenwald sits the Vorrh, a vast - perhaps endless - forest. It is a place of demons and angels, of warriors and priests. Sentient and magical, the Vorrh bends time and wipes memory. Legend has it that the Garden of Eden still exists at its heart. Now a renegade English soldier aims to be the first human to traverse its expanse. Armed with only a strange bow, he begins his journey, but some fear the consequences of his mission, and a native marksman has been chosen to stop him.

Story
When her stepmother dies, Caro returns to her childhood home in the rural English countryside. She hadn’t seen Elizabeth in years, but the remote farmhouse offers refuge from a bad relationship and a chance to start again. But going through Elizabeth’s belongings unearths memories Caro would rather stay buried. In particular, the story her stepmother would tell her about two little girls and the terrible thing they do. As heavy snow traps Caro in the village, where her neighbours stare and whisper, Caro is forced to question why Elizabeth hated her so much and what she was hiding.
