Story
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Before science, there were myths. Today, we see them as fiction, but in the past, myths were a way to explain all the natural phenomena that surrounded mankind. History Academy’s brand-new book will tell you all about ancient Greek, Egypt, Norse, and Japanese mythologies. By listening to this book, you will enter a world that is neither legend nor history. You might consider this book a sort of "hybrid" between reality and fantasy. The text is based on folk tales, beliefs, and sightings, but also on old official documents that are often more disturbing than horror stories.

Story
Most people have heard of the Celts - the elusive, ancient tribal people who resided in present-day England, Ireland, Scotland and France. Paradoxically characterized as both barbaric and innocent, the Celts appeal to the modern world as a symbol of a bygone era, a world destroyed by the ambition of empire and the spread of Christianity throughout Western Europe. Despite the pervasive cultural and literary influence of the Celts, shockingly little is known of their way of life and beliefs, because very few records of their stories exist.

"A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, 'Can we do this anonymously?' Because I don't need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week." So begins Percy Jackson's Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic - and sarcastic asides - to the classics.

I always have been so intrigued by Greek mythology and wanted to learn more about it. This audio is perfect anyone who is being introduced to the myths, or wanting to learn more. It really gives so much explanation of how the tree is structured. The narrator truly gave life to each word, each tale. This is a book that must be read and or listened to.

Allegorical Gold
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely, this is one of my favorite, no-nonsense write ups about the original Greek Mythological Stories.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths?
The last 'About the Author' part, where he describes the constant inter family tension being the entire reason for the diverse tales.
Which character – as performed by Todd Haberkorn – was your favorite?
Hermes. No doubt.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not really. It's better in chunks, while driving, or on lunch. There is no large portions of continuity between tales, but the stories themselves almost need to be listened in one sitting.
Any additional comments?
Absolutely great performance, and great stories. Wish there were a thousand more of these.

This audio book is well written, well delivered clear and succinct. It tells you all the stories you wanted to hear without any other fluff. It manages to deliver a lot of information in very little time with practically no decorative language, but it's so clearly written that this is not overwhelming. Highly recommended.

TALES FROM MY YOUTH
The tales of good and evil still bring warmth to this now 37 year old boy cum author. i remember reading the tales of the gods and greek mythology as a young boy and i believe helped shape the imagination i have.
This book gives me a chill and a satisfying feeling that transends back to those days as my eyes would hungrily read every tale and fable. This book has given me great delight to read and listen to via audible and the narrator gives the listener the tools required to let their minds and imagination step into its world and experience the myths for themselves.

Short but good. No foreknowledge required.
I don't know why but people often assume I'll know about Greek Gods and stuff but my knowledge was pretty minimal. I tried Robert Graves' book but that wasn't my cup of tea. This was a great book.
I don't know about the chronology but the stories are told in such a way that you are normally introduced to characters before they appear in other stories which is good.
The stories themselves are pretty uninteresting to start with, the Greek Gods are basically toddlers with superpowers doing random stuff on whims. Around hour 4 the stories shift to those of demi-gods and men which have much more plot depth and are much more interesting.
I don't see the value in Greek myths though. Other than a generalised warning that women are petty, jealous, nasty, cruel and irrational (these stories aren't kind to women, especially mothers) there aren't really any morals or learnings to take away. I'm not sure why these tales are held in such reverance.
The narration is great. Good voice for godding. There's no Hercules or Xena but I think most of the main stories get covered.

A 'different' interpretation
Certainly a different interpretation of some of the myths and not really for the better. The 'sword in the stone' of Theseus made me laugh, and the tale of Medusa made her more to blame than the victim of the gods. Even with a classics degree I enjoy hearing the stories over and over but had to give up on this, was a little bit too left of centre for me.

Very entertaining and suitable for the whole family
I was pleasantly surprised by this retelling of Greek myths. The quality of the writing was first class, neither childishly simple nor over-relishing the gorier aspects. There was plenty of humour both in the writing and in the narration of the tales.
Though I was aware of bits and pieces of the myths before listening to this, I don’t think I knew the full story of any of them, and certainly had not picked up on all the family relationships between the various gods, heroes and monsters. As a sidelight I found I was learning more about some of the entities and places that had been mentioned in Urban Fantasy books.
I might perhaps have preferred an English narrator because of the occasional American pronunciation that jarred, like saying “plated” for the word “plaited”. This is not a fault of this narrator as I’ve heard the same pronunciation by another American actor. It didn’t impact my enjoyment of the narration and I’m sure I’ll be listening to this book again, and to other books narrated by Todd Haberkorn.
