“Gorgeous.... With her trademark passion, wit, and fierce feminism, Natalie Haynes gives much-needed voice to the silenced women of the Trojan War.”—Madeline Miller, author of Circe

Shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, a gorgeous retelling of the Trojan War from the perspectives of the many women involved in its causes and consequences—for fans of Madeline Miller.

This is the women’s war, just as much as it is the men’s. They have waited long enough for their turn . . .

This was never the story of one woman, or two. It was the story of them all . . .

In the middle of the night, a woman wakes to find her beloved city engulfed in flames. Ten seemingly endless years of conflict between the Greeks and the Trojans are over. Troy has fallen.

From the Trojan women whose fates now lie in the hands of the Greeks, to the Amazon princess who fought Achilles on their behalf, to Penelope awaiting the return of Odysseus, to the three goddesses whose feud started it all, these are the stories of the women whose lives, loves, and rivalries were forever altered by this long and tragic war.

A woman’s epic, powerfully imbued with new life, A Thousand Ships puts the women, girls and goddesses at the center of the Western world’s great tale ever told.

Not always the most pleasant stories to hear, but many great lessons. These old Greek stories are fascinating.

Profound, moving, achingly sad and perfectly rendered. I am thankful this book exists. Please write forever.

I will read anything Natalie Haynes writes

Basically the stories of the ILIAD and ODYSSEY retold from the women’s point of view as wives, widows, captives, and mothers. Beautifully done.

Excellent narration; moving stories

This book is so well written that I think I finished reading it in less than eight hours. Every chapter is more heartbreaking and eye-opening than the next and there’s moments in the book that I never knew I needed between these characters. This book does an excellent job of shedding light on female characters that were previously neglected in a way that can make you fully sympathize with all of them. there was not a single character in this book that I didn’t at one point completely agree with. It is excellent and everything by this author is excellent.

Probably the best book I’ve read all year!

Until I heard theses stories so fully and colorfully told, I didn't realize that we were literally missing HALF of all human history, at least in our traditional telling of Greek myths. 🤯

Oh, also, the narration was fabulous! She didn't QUITE outdo Perdita Weeks in her narration of Circe, but she came damn close. 👏

An engaging classic!
