Publisher's Summary

A sharp, skilled and utterly fearless archer in the army of King Edward III, young Thomas of Hookton has been making his way through France for three years now, fighting fiercely alongside the English troops. But being a soldier in the great Hundred Years War is only a means to an end: Thomas of Hookton is hot on the trails of the man who brutally slaughtered his father and stole his only treasure - rumored to be the Holy Grail - from the ancient church of Hookton. All Europe wants the grail, and though many doubt it even exists, no one would willingly allow an enemy to find Christendom's most precious relic. To seek revenge and reclaim what's rightfully his, Thomas finds himself in a murderous race with the dangerous black rider who keeps cunningly eluding his grasp.

In the tradition of Ken Follett and Edward Rutherford, Heretic is the third book in Bernard Cornwell's remarkable new series about the search for the Holy Grail.

So that's what happened to the Grail.

This was a great series to listen to. Heretic, being the third and final book in the series, is packed with action and suspense. Thomas continues the final chapter of his quest in finding the Grail, avenging the deaths of his father and his late wife. In the end Thomas manages to....well I guess you need to listen to the book to find out.

The only bad thing I can say about this book is that this is the end to the series. The narration by Andrew Cullum was outstanding as usual.

Long Live Thomas Hookfin

Enjoyed this like many others (Sharpe’s series, Saxon Chronicles, etc.) and appreciate the history lessons. My all time favorite is Agincourt and beg for a movie. (if you liked that one, watch The King (loosely based on Agincourt and more around the young king - excellent). Needless to say, we need more of our hero Thomas Hookfin, and was glad to notice another in this series which I thought ended here. Cornwell is the best historical fiction writer hands down and his writings have inspired interest of a time this American didn’t know much about previously. The historical notes with additional information (and details regarding fiction versus facts) are a special bonus and much appreciated professional courtesy. Please keep them coming!

Best of the Grail Quest trilogy

This was my favorite by far of the Grail Quest series. I would give it 3.5 stars. This book doesn’t have the major battle as a major part of the plot as did the previous two books did, but the story was much better. Cornwell seems to have found his footing as master storyteller in this one, as it reads much more Sharpe-like and easier flowing. Thomas the archer leads a band of men deep in to France to draw out his evil cousin. Things don’t quite go according to plan, and Thomas has various adventures leading up to the final (non-historical and minor) battle.

A fun yarn, spun by a master.

A thrilling and interesting spin on the legend of the Grail. All the pieces were there for a well told tail.

always a treat!

Bernard Corwell has an astounding ability to create a dynamic story and weave it into history. each of his books is like searching among ruins and finding treasure and Andrew Cullum brings the history alive through his narration; negating the prospect of trying to picture the story with your imagination, he paints that portrait for you.
