I really really enjoyed this book. Let me just say that first.

Am I the only one who can’t stand The MC attitude?
He complains about everything and everyone.
It’s literally hours of the MC being annoyed…

I really hope the second book corrects this. It’s really painful to listen to sometimes…

a realistic hero and a dog

toooooooooooooooo many choices for everything. just pick 3 or 4 and move on dude, it just gets boring when you compare ten darn skills or classes.

The Hell Difficulty was Finishing this Awful Book

The only thing this story has related to hell difficulty is the onerous task of completing the listen, which I only did in order to pass the requirements to post a review (the first few hours were enough to outbalance any conceivable redeeming factors which may have occurred later on, but unsurprisingly did not). This first-person ltrpg fantasy is a terrible listener experience in almost every sense I can imagine. The story feels as if it were written, performed, and edited by an early AI fed by limited source information.
First person writing, especially in extended writing, is a very challenging position with which to stick. By nature, it's very personal, each line of text coming directly from the mind of the subject. It's cool for poetry and short-stories, as the demands for entertainment are less. It's also cool for passages within longer writings, as the shifting of perspectives can be crafted in novel and creative ways to lend depth to drama, entertainment, and development. This story, however, sticks to first person all of the damn way, and the writing isn't skilled enough to rise up to the challenge of maintaining interest for very long. It quickly grows tiresome with zero shift in perspective as every line zeroes-in on the direct thoughts of each character, and 95-99% of the perspective is from the Main Character, whose persona is quickly fleshed-out and revealed to be extremely shallow and simple, with psychotic, dark, and paranoid characteristics (don't get me wrong, I can appreciate psychotic, dark, and paranoid, if done passably well) which do not grow appreciably throughout the book. There is no inspiration, excitement, or passion of any kind to be found in this hero (or anti-hero). It's just boring, and sad. What's depressing and maybe a little infuriating is that this book has received hundreds of stellar, maybe equally shallow, five-star reviews, and I can't help but think they too have been generated by simple AI models, by folks who have been compensated to leave such reviews, folks who have not listened to story, or even those have simply lied to trick others into also spending their money.
Anyway. I gave the narrator 3 stars because the performance was a doomed task before he even started, and maybe Henry Kramer did the best that he could have done to earn his paycheck. We all gotta eat.
I strongly recommend not purchasing this book, unless one would like to study a demonstration of how first-person writing can fail so well, and impose an almost impossible task upon a voice performer.
Yuck. It will take some time to shake the trauma related to enduring this hell level difficulty listen. I do believe I've willingly exposed myself to too much shockingly cheeky indifference to awfulness, and have only myself to blame. Good luck, dear fellow listeners. Choose wisely.

This is a great 1st book!!!

The MC is more pragmatic and less idealistic than most MCs in this genre ...but almost too much, like intentionally written to have a borderline psychosis that comes across really well. Like he's an unpredictable character, which makes him interesting.
I liked a lot of choices made by the author, he definitely had some original ideas. I especially like the direction he went with mana manipulation abilities ...very cool stuff.
That said the story felt a little thin. I think outside of the MC's progression there is not much story to sink ur teeth into.
The narrator did a good job, but whether it was his style or just the source material there were times when he got a little monotone.
Regardless, I enjoyed the book and I think I'll check out book 2 whenever that comes out.
It's well worth the credit ;)

It’s a fantastic start

First half of the book the MC is very unlikeable from a human perspective. He is a solid MC though
Second half of the book he doesn’t soften but is more in control of his self I would say. Really pleased I picked this one up
