fantastic book that requires your full attention

For context, i usually listen to audiobooks while working and driving so when i started this book I realized i needed to pay more attention to the story because its really well told but frequently jumps to different points in time and tells multiple short stories about the members of the ghosts. It was easy to miss some of the transitions to different stories and could be confusing but it was such a good book that i went back for a second listen to pick up the details that i missed.

A story with no plot

There is nothing happening in this story, except for long descriptions of mundane things. I don't know if it's because this is Dan Abnett's first book or what, but characters are all over the place. No reasons to why they go places, where they are going, or what they are actually try to accomplish. Even the narrator sounds genuinely bored for most of story, but he still does his best with the material. Skip this one unless you absolutely must know the very uninteresting back story to Gaunt's Ghosts, or if you just need to fall asleep

Ghostmaker, by far the best in Sci-Fy!

Although written years ago before the iPhone or even Amazon existed, Gauntsghosts is just as pertinent to the genre as it was when I first read it in its paperback format. I would recommend Warhammer 40,000 to anyone who loves Sci-aft!

one of the best

if you listen to The first One and thought the second can't be as good as that then you're wrong and it may feel like it's slacking a little bit in the beginning but that fades relatively quickly. so far this series has to be my number one I wish this was a live-action show with a great budget and passionate cast and producer

Solid story, weird bit at the end

Genuinely solid, but the weird bit at the end is way out of verse and doesn't quite make sense, but whatever. Enjoyed listening and the rest of the boom is gold.

Is this abridged?

I haven't read the books but i've read the saint omnibus and the eisenhorn and ravenor series and while this isn't bad it just doesn't seem to fit Abnettes style. It seems like it is skipping over some important parts and the jumping around makes it hard to follow which are hall marks of abridged books. Maybe its just because its one of Abnetts earlier works and his style has evolved over time but I can't shake the feeling that there is missing content. I know for a fact that it gets better because I loved the Saint omnibus and wanted to see where it started. Otherwise really enjoying what parts are coherent enough to put together a real story. Toby Longworth gives it class and is a veteran of the WH40k black library.

I forgot how good this ghostmaker is!

Ghostmaker is a amazing collections of short stories, it was great to revisit them.
I can't remember the voice actors name but he is great, what a fething ledge! with spot on scottish accents bringing the ghosts alive and a massive locker of other accents available to him that I didn't know I wanted or needed! bravo
had a lot of fun listening to this book, gutted that the whole back catalogue isn't here @audible get on it please!

Having read these books already, the audiobook brought a new perspective to it. Dan Abnett's writing is complimented perfectly by Toby Longworth.

I am completely biased

I've had this book on my shelf for a year and never found time to sit and read it, so i decided to listen to it instead, its a good story with its moments of levity, but does well to capture the soul of life as a guardsman in the 41st millenium.

Brilliant series, brilliant narration.

The Gaunts Ghosts novels are action packed and beautifully written anyway. But Toby Longworth’s narration brings them to life. I’m amazed by the sheer amount of accents and voices this man can imitate. Auto purchase this series.

Consistently great Military Sci-fi

Abnett makes what can/could be a silly universe for teens interested in a miniature wargame something worth a read/listen for an older audience that would never have heard of 40k or Games Work Shop. He writes fantastic actions sequences and creates lovely plots, fantastic worlds and twists throughout this series of novels.
This volume sets out what should have been book one (it’s provides more back story on key characters). It fills out holes & get you ready for the next volume in what is a very addictive series.
I first read these books when first released & coming back for a listen has been wonderful. The narrator does a fantastic job with a great range of voices and pace for the the many action scenes.
The stories push the boundaries further then a young adult lit (it’s military sci-fi). There is lots of action and gore but also plenty of examining the motivations & behaviour of the characters in what is a very dark universe of conflict, military oligarchy, tech and supernatural forces.
I enjoy this series more for then I ever did the game though I think they provide fantastic “world building” ideas for ppl into the 40k hobby. But also excellent escapist action literature for anyone vaguely interested in sci-fi action novels.

Not bad, good souize

One of the few poor showings from Dan Abnett, with this novel being less of a cohesive story and more of a loose collection of cool story ideas that have been strung together.
Great to get some more backstory to the ghosts and as per usual Toby Longworth knocks it out of the park, and I think if it was advertised and structured a bit better I might've enjoyed it more as DA is usually good at trying threads together by the end.
For the advertisement, it only has to do with the blurb for less than half of the book, other than that it's all flashbacks, memories and old tales that quite a few of which would've sat well before the first book or placed sparingly in this one.
