One of the greatest and most admired artists of the twentieth century, Georgia O’Keeffe led a life rich in intense relationships—with family, friends, and especially with fellow artist Alfred Stieglitz.

Her extraordinary accomplishments, such as the often eroticized flowers, bones, stones, skulls, and pelvises that she painted with such command, are all the more remarkable when seen in the context of the struggle she waged between the rigorous demands of love and work.

When Roxana Robinson’s definitive biography of O’Keeffe was first published in 1989, it received rave reviews and was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. This new edition features a new foreword by the author, setting O’Keefe in an artistic context over the last thirty years since the book was first published, as well as previously unpublished letters of the young O’Keeffe to her lover, Arthur MacMahon. This book also relates the story of Robinson’s own encounter with the artist.

As interest in O’Keeffe continues to grow among museum-goers and scholars alike, this book remains indispensable for understanding her life and art.

a wonderful biography I was captivated until the last few chapters where the author goes from observer to soap opera teller it was a sad ending to a wonderful biography.

Great to the last few chapters

The thoroughness of the story

Even though I’m generally not a fan of O’Keeffe’s work, this was a well written and organized intimate look into a unique personality’s artistic life, and that of others who were intertwined with it.

As an artist, myself, working in a fairly remote environment, it makes me feel less alone in navigating my work life, to hear historic accounts of how others do it.

Once again, Bernadette Dunne did an excellent job of narrating this book, which held my interest up until the added-on letters to Arthur, at the end. Though I believe they were worth including, I found O’Keeffe’s pleas, to Arthur, for self-reassurance, tediously repetitive.

Held my interest all the way through.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves painting, the southwest, and/or biography in general. Georgia was a voluminous letter writer and it is a pleasure to hear her words through the seasons of her life.

Delightful

Was a good story and appreciate all the intricate details. Some of the story was a bit disheartening, but only because of the idea I had of Georgia.

Love a good Biography
