A captivating, spirited account of the intense relationship among four artists whose strong personalities and aesthetic ideals drew them together, pulled them apart, and profoundly influenced the very shape of 20th-century art.

New York, 1921: Acclaimed photographer Alfred Stieglitz celebrates the success of his latest exhibition - the centerpiece, a series of nude portraits of his soon-to-be wife, the young Georgia O'Keeffe. The exhibit acts as a turning point for the painter poised to make her entrance into the art scene. There, she meets Rebecca Salsbury, the fiancé of Stieglitz’s protégé, Paul Strand, marking the start of a bond between the couples that will last more than a decade and reverberate throughout their lives. In the years that followed, O'Keeffe and Stieglitz become the preeminent couple in American modern art, spurring on each other's creativity. Observing their relationship leads Salsbury to encourage new artistic possibilities for Strand and to rethink her own potential as an artist.

The topics were dense, yet the narrator kept the story interesting and moving. Well done!

Well woven storytelling.

I read a few books and studied the work of Stieglitz, strand and o’keef for years. The book gave me a new appreciation of their works.

Amazing

I thought that I would enjoy this book more than I really did. The promise of a combined biography of four fascinating people - artists, lovers, pioneers - is intriguing. For some reason, even though the book is very well written and thoroughly researched, I found it boring at times. Maybe in its fidelity to life events, the narrative reveals the boredom of portions of the protagonists lives. In any case, for art lovers and photography history buffs this is a wonderful source of information. I now know far more about these four fascinating figures than I knew before I read the book, and that is a valuable experience.

A competent account of four interesting lives
