Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Wonderful continuation of the story.
I really enjoy this story and the development it's taken! I especially liked the narration on this one, and thought that Brad Wills did an excellent job of portraying the different characters. This book was another great adventure, and included a lot of magical elements that I've really enjoyed. So far, this has been my favorite book in the series. The author also did an excellent job of writing both evil and kind characters and showing their strengths and weaknesses. *I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

WHY change the Narrator? WHY?
When you've got 13 great books in a series, why change a good thing on the 6th book? The Narrator Brad Wills CANNOT do female voices. He's way too Breathy! I had to turn down the sound so much because his girly voice just sounded wrong to me. Unfortunately, since I didn't check before I purchased all the books in 2-3 lump purchases, I'll take responsibility & not try to return them. The story is still good, I hope I can get passed the breathing problems by the new Narrator...

Readers being milked
I have bought many of this author's books (over 25). Save yourself needless frustration. Only read his books where the series is complete. He keeps introducing new books that do not move the story at all. 11 books into a series and the story arc isn't even in the middle. Clearly just moving around and fighting endlessly with no regard to actually finishing the story.
Feels like the author or his team, have decided to simply keep milking us readers. I wish this weren't so, because I was enjoying these books. But I cannot keep ordering books, and get no resolution for years. Then watch as 3 and 4 additional series are introduced without first finishing the ones already in progress.

Great book ruined by awful awful narrator
I love the Frostborn series, and I've read the entire thing. I'm now listening to it while I work on tedious tasks. The first five audiobooks were wonderful. Then suddenly Book 6, The Dark Warden, has a new narrator and he is simply terrible. He speaks so incredibly fast it's sort of hilarious because the characters sound like they've been speeded up, like when you watch a video on 1.5x or even 2x speed. It's funny at first but soon becomes annoying, distracting, and close to un-listenable. This narrator honestly sounds like that guy who used to do the Micro Machines commercials. The words are so fast you almost can't understand. And I don't understand how anyone could listen to this performance and think it's acceptable to go ahead and sell.

Should just get a hard copy now...
1* for narration, 4* for story. How Brad Mills got a deal to narrate anything other than a nursery rhyme is beyond me. Some of his portrayals are fine enough. But the ones that are bad are beyond annoying and detract from the story. The story itself is relatively predictable but not bland.

Awful narrator
Why do producers think it is a good idea to change narrator half way through a series? The narrator of this book ruins it with a a misunderstanding of when inflection and emphasis is required. The tone is bland and grating, the character voices irritating and the modulation infuriating. What has been an otherwise good series and story line has been ruined and I would recommend anyone picking this book when listening as part of the series, to consider purchasing a copy to read not listen. Your enjoyment of this book will be marred by this narrator........and he is the narrator for Book 7 which fills me with dread.

DREADFUL NARRATOR
why change mid series. Mara are commoners but suddenly talk like toffs as do all the women which does not suit the genre. He lacks characterisation and his general narration is unpleasant. He has a voice more suited to reading the shipping forecast on BBC World Service. What keeps me hooked on a series are the characters, getting to know them and following their encounters. This is hard when they c hange mid series. I couldn't give 0 stars for performance so I've been generous with 1.
Good story ruined by poor choice of narrators.
