It all started with the geese. The Firefly crew is eager to get paid for their latest job, but when payment arrives as a gaggle of geese instead of a purse, their stay on the planet Brome gets an indefinite extension. No matter that the geese will fetch a pretty penny once they get somewhere to sell them. Without coin, they can’t buy fuel, and without fuel, they can’t get offworld. Serenity is stuck.

Luckily the foreman of the local fuel refinery, Lyle Horne, wants to hire them, but not to work in the factory. He needs their help on a job only a crew like Serenity can pull off. Horne is an old friend of Shepherd Book’s. Mal would love to know more, but Lyle’s got bigger fish to fry. An authority known as The Governess has been kidnapping his workers. Lyle wants them back.

The crew need to break into her fortress of an estate and retrieve the workers. Jayne, who suffered a goose-related injury, stays behind to keep an eye on Horne while the rest of the crew split up to infiltrate the fortress. However, the Governess has her own story, as do the workers. Is Lyle lying? While they’re trying to make sense of it all, the workers’ children come aboard Serenity, with a plan to steal the ship and launch their own rescue mission.

Just like the show

If you’re looking for something that feels like an episode of the Firefly show, then look no further. Takes place before the Serenity movie, and while there is nothing particularly ground breaking or revelatory about the story, it’s still enjoyable.

Starts out fast and hooked me from the beginning. Great story and as always amazing narration. Great job all!

Fun Story

Nice book, a fun listen! Without giving anything away, the backstory on some crew was interesting and fitting.

So close!

I really wanted to like this. The person who narrated this was amazing! His Mal was absolutely spot on! But he nailed everyone else too. Please have him narrate from now on.
The story... the story was so close to being good. I honestly believe the writer is right there. Right about to be excellent. This just wasn't it. They included current issues into a future where it no longer matters. I read/listen to escape today's issues. It also doesn't fit the series. And constantly bringing previous plot lines so we're sure they've seen the show. It was clunky and slowed it down. It wasn't necessary.
The narrator was amazing, plot line very well thought out, writing style decent. Just leave current day out of the future, and the unnecessary regurgitation of plots we all know by heart.
If the writer reads this - please don't stop writing. I think minus those two things, I would read a lot of your work. (If your some famous writer - then you're just not my cup of tea.)
Still give it a listen. You may totally enjoy it.

Captured the essence of the characters

Another winner, takes me back to the show. Pretty good story, fun character interaction, worthy of the name Firefly.

One of the best glimpses into The Shepherd yet.

Tell someone recognizes the opportunity and rebooting a firefly universe from a tenant storyline, these books help to fill the void. This book revealed just a little more about the Shepherd than we knew before, and I for one I’m grateful. Great performance, well done setting, and a few new background characters made this one of my favorite episodes yet.
