Publisher's summary

In May 2003 prominent philosopher, author, and professor J. P. Moreland awoke in the middle of the night to a severe panic attack. Though often anxious by temperament and upbringing, Moreland had never experienced such an incident before. Thus began an extended battle with debilitating anxiety and depression.

More than a decade later, Moreland continues to manage mental illness. Yet along the way he's moved from shame and despair to vulnerability and hope. In Finding Quiet Moreland comes alongside fellow sufferers with encouragement and practical, hard-won advice. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, nearly 20 percent of Americans suffer from mental illness, and people in the pews are not immune. Moreland explores the spiritual and physical aspects of mental illness, pointing readers toward sound sources of information, treatment, and recovery.

Bracing and honest, Finding Quiet will validate the experiences of believers with mental illness, remind them they are not alone, and provide reassurance that they can not only survive but thrive again.

A Bit Too Technical

I was not prepared for the technical nature of this book. Many practical ideas are presented, and the author backed up his suggestions with both scientific study and scripture. The format includes many bullet points and subtitles, which are confusing in audio form. The reader is pleasant, but he did not pause sufficiently to indicate a new subtitle or bullet point. On the plus side, the author summarized the major bullet points at the end of the book; also, a pdf is included with the audiobook which can help the listener sort out the points. An excellent bibliography is also included.

very honest look at depression and anxiety

the church has let fear rule their thinking concerning depression and anxiety. neurotransmitters are just as essential as insulin, and we are not opposed to insulin. i recommend this book for several alternative therapies that are also helpful in conjunction with medications and nutrition.

Best Book on Anxiety I’ve read!

This is a must read for people who have experienced anxiety in their life for short or long periods of time!
I have experienced anxiety my entire life and I’ve had two breakdowns and this book is a book that I wish I would’ve had years and years ago.

Decent

I love JP Moreland but a good chunk of this book was spent pushing medicine. I was looking for more biblically based spiritual solutions to anxiety but he goes on and on about how wonderful medicine is.

worth listening to

I thought this book was a good listen. I appreciate the detailed descriptions of heart math and relaxation techniques as well as the encouragement to give it time and to be patient with yourself. I also appreciated the encouragement regarding self-worth. another thing I liked was the candor with which he shared his experiences. What a blessing to know someone has had these experiences and has grown in his faith and learns to deal with anxious tendencies. I don't entirely agree with the medication information as well as the homeopathic information. My relative has struggled greatly with anxiety and depression, and medication took us to some terrible places. She is off of medication and doing much better and uses some homeopathic remedies on occasion when symptoms get bad. She didn't think they were going to help, but they did, so we know it was not placebo. anyway, medication is for some people and not for others. also, our experience with a psychiatrist was not great either. I know the sciatrist wanted to help, but it was what sent us down the road of so many cocktails of medicines that caused all sorts of terrible side effects. also, our family is quite familiar with EMDR therapy. this is a wonderful option, but it should not be done without a therapist. In the beginning, it sent my relative into a state of derealization, which not everyone experiences but is a possible side effect. It went on for several weeks and was very disturbing. Thankfully, that passed, and EMDR was ultimately helpful. But I would strongly caution against recommending people attempt that therapy on their own. It is a very powerful therapy. again, I appreciate all of the great information on relaxation and meditation in God, but I think he should have related your medicine and EMDR experiences in a different way. they certainly do not help everyone, and they can do more harm than good.

Great for anxiety sufferers.

There’s lots of information in this book. If you must listen to the book either have a journal close by or by the physical book as well. There are many things you will want to highlight.
