Publisher's Summary

'That time is upon us. I can feel it coming. That evil barbarian will not be satisfied until he has engulfed the whole world in war and death. I fear for us all.'

In a triumphant return to his much-loved Courtney series, Wilbur Smith introduces us to the bravest new member of the famed family, Saffron Courtney.

Saffron grows up on a sprawling Kenyan estate, under the watchful eye of her father, prominent businessman and distinguished war veteran Leon Courtney. Her childhood is idyllic until a family tragedy forces her to grow up much faster than necessary. As she grows into a spirited teenager, her thirst for knowledge and adventure leads her to England, where she finds herself inevitably drawn into the heart of the gathering storm in the lead up to World War II.

Gerhard von Meerbach is the privileged and idealistic younger brother of Konrad von Meerbach, heir to an industrial fortune and vocal supporter of the Nazi Party. Gerhard struggles to stay true to his principles in an increasingly cruel world. His friendship with a Jewish man places him in danger and forces him to take a stand against the forces of evil that have overtaken his country and his family. But, unknown to him, he is caught in a trap that could cost him everything he holds dear.

As the Second World War looms over them all, Saffron and Gerhard's worlds will collide - but will there be more to unite them than tear them apart?

A love story in the time of heroes, War Cry is the latest breathtaking episode in Wilbur Smith's epic account of one beloved family.

    "Not bad Wilbur"

After the mess the last book was this is a return to typical Wilbur and I'm sure there will be a follow up as the story was left incomplete. A nice return to what Wilbur does best.

"Used to be a big fan!"
What disappointed you about War Cry?

A poor story badly told. No where near as good as previous books in the series.

Would you ever listen to anything by Wilbur Smith and David Churchill again?

No The use of 'ghost writers' cashing in on the name of a great writer is disingenuous and repulsive.

Which character – as performed by Sean Barrett – was your favourite?

Lets face it he is not very good at female voices, other wise not a bad performance.

What character would you cut from War Cry?

The only thing I would cut from 'War Cry' is David Churchill and wish to have Wilbur Smith back at his prime.

    Any additional comments?

I used to be a big fan, even waited and had the great man sign a few of his books from time to time, but alas no longer. 'War Cry' was the last chance; a story poor and predictable in the worst way.
The narrative was both unimaginative and ridiculously unbelievable in equal measures. It was also only half told,(no doubt at the behest of the exploitive publishers!).

Oh Wilbur why have you let this happen? You should have retired with pride.

Where does War Cry rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top 10 - Wilbur Smith is in my Top 3 of authors!

What was one of the most memorable moments of War Cry?

the whole book was very good

Have you listened to any of Sean Barrett’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No - He has a deep voice which works well with male characters, it didn't work so well on the female roles, having a female narrator as well for these roles would have worked better - but still I cant fault the narration he did a sterling job overall!

    Any additional comments?

I hope Wilbur Smith has submitted the manuscript to the publishers already!! - as the Courtney legacy continues and this story cannot go unfinished!
