Publisher's Summary

A superb novel set in classic Stephen King territory - a small new England town about to be engulfed by terror.

Turn off the television - in fact, why don't you turn off all the lights except for the one over your favourite chair? - and we'll talk about vampires here in the dim. I think I can make you believe in them.

Stephen King, from the introduction. Salem's Lot is a small New England town with the usual quota of gossips, drinkers, weirdos and respectable folk. Of course there are tales of strange happenings - but not more than in any other town its size.

Ben Mears, a moderately successful writer, returns to the Lot to write a novel based on his early years, and to exorcise the terrors that have haunted him since childhood. The event he witnessed in the house now rented by a new resident. A newcomer with a strange allure. A man who causes Ben some unease as things start to happen: a child disappears, a dog is brutally killed - nothing unusual, except the list starts to grow.

Soon surprise will turn to bewilderment, bewilderment to confusion and finally to terror....

High hopes not quite reached

Don't get me wrong, there are good bits in this. But it was incredibly tame in comparison to what I was hoping for from King. I really do feel as though this was thinner on plot than most of his other novels, and going from 'IT' and 'The Shining' to this was just a bit flat. Not as much actually happens as you would expect, just a lot of descriptions into characters' backgrounds and the intricacies of the townspeople's relationships. This is classic King, of course, but is usually accompanied by a lot more substance. I only stuck with this due to the great narration and wanting to see if it improved. Unfortunately it didn't, and I am rather underwhelmed. Not bad, but not his best.

Not as great as I expected

Salem’s Lot is one of those classic King Novels that I always wanted to get around to reading but never seemed to have the time. So, when I came across the audiobook version it was a no-brainer.

However, I kind of wish I had left it as one of those I wanted to experience rather than actually experiencing it. It’s not a bad book. It is, for the most part, enjoyable. I just found it distinctly average.

King’s character development, as ever, is flawless. He is the master of the slow burn character development. I just don’t think he comes close to being a master of vampire tales.

About halfway through I felt as though too much was happening. I felt that what was happening made it near impossible for me to enjoy it as thoroughly as. I wanted to. Certain characters not being there any more, the pacing and certain elements of the plot just jumbled into one big ball of ‘average’ for me. Which is a shame as, until things took that turn, I had high hopes.

My other gripe is that the ending is a kind of non-ending. Leaves the reader asking ‘so what happens? Seriously, is that it?’ It felt like a bit too much hard work getting through to have zero pay off. I know that endings aren’t something King is particularly strong at. I still have rage moments where ‘Under the Dome’s’ ending is concerned, but I expected a little more.

As I said, it’s enjoyable, but average. Hence the medium-range score. Pretty much all other reviews I have read have been 4 or 5 star. Maybe I’m just incredibly difficult to please.
