Publisher's Summary

New York Times best seller Jeffrey Archer continues his beloved Clifton Chronicle series as Harry and Emma finally begin building a happy life - but a dangerous family enemy is about to resurface....

Best Kept Secret opens a moment after the end of The Sins of the Father, with the resolution of the trial and the triumphant marriage of Harry Clifton and Elizabeth Barrington, finally uniting their family. Harry, now a best-selling novelist; Emma; their son, Sebastian; and orphaned Jessica make a new life for themselves, but all is not as happy and secure as it could be. Emma's brother, Giles, is engaged to a woman who may be more interested in Barrington's fortune and title than in a long and happy marriage. And Sebastian, though he is bright, isn't quite the hard worker that his father was at school, and finds a hard time resisting the temptations that his somewhat unsavory friends provide.

It all comes to a head when a new villain is uncovered, a face from the past with grudges against both Harry and Giles - Fisher, who tortured Harry at school and later took credit for Giles' heroics during the war. Fisher teams up with Giles' now ex-wife to wreak havoc on Giles' latest election as well as meddle with affairs inside Barringtons, while Harry and Emma must deal with a new scheme that Sebastian has unwittingly fallen into with a supposed friend. The drama continues for Harry Clifton and his family, bringing this mesmerizing saga into the 1960s.

    "Jeffrey Archer's Shameless!"

The Clinton Chronicles are addictive and as formula driven as a PBS/BBC costume-drama epic. They sprawl over decades of the Clinton family’s astonishing ability to survive the wiles of bad… bad… bad… villains who are unspeakably evil.. evil… EVIL…

Each volume carefully (some might quibble and say.. “tediously”) creates a new peril sure to destroy this loving, plucky, and noble tribe only to end in… in… a cliff hanger that demands the next book in the series to reveal. &^&%#!!

Yep, Jeffery Archer’s shameless. His characters have the depth and complexity of a Marvel Comic Book, and his plots seem driven by Snidely Whiplash menacing poor Nell who he’s lashed to the tracks.

And yet, I’ve listened to five of them now… Only Time Will Tell, The Sins of the Fathers, Best Kept Secret, Be Careful What You Wish For, and Mightier than the Sword. Each of these were already available on Audible so they could be purchased and enjoyed as one long tale. I recall giggling smugly when I understood his cliff hanger stunts, realizing that I’d not have to wait a year until the next one arrived: Unlike the poor addicted fools who discovered them one at a time as they were originally published.

And then I cursed at the end of Mightier than the Sword to realize that now I was in the cue of addled Archer addicts waiting to see how the family’d escape this latest threat. I HATE IT!

My advice, don’t start this series until you are sure Archer’s written the end to it. BEWARE ALL YE WHO ENTER HERE! Archer will shamelessly diddle with you.

BTW, Alex Jennings creates the ensemble with a wily power that compliments Archer's

Enjoyable due to interesting characters. Will not be a book I will ever want to revisit, but fun while it lasted.

I wouldn't say it was rubbish, but it didn't capture my imagination. Try another series.

    "Couldn't listen some parts"

Some parts were not possible to listen and about chapter 29 it didn't match exactly with the book. I used to read and listen the audio simultaneusly to practice my English. I'm Spanish speaker.

"Come to me said the spider to the fly"

Entharling.... I wondered how Mr.Archer would continue to draw me into the web of intrigue...The way he introduces characters and weaves another story line is masterful. I almost felt like I was being led into the story.... I would exclaim out loud at some the disastous turns....so on I go the next book in the series. After all, these have become 'my people'.

"Not at good as book 1 and book 2"
What would have made Best Kept Secret better?

Emma and Harry should have played a bigger role in the book. The story about Martinez and the trip to Buenos Aires was very unrealistic. Emma's narrator made Emma sound a lot older than her 36 years. Sir Giles was portayed as weak, not involved with the Barrington business, yet the first two books casted him as a go getter. Masie was hardly mentioned???

What could Jeffrey Archer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The books should flow from one to the other, but I felt the continuity was disjointed

What three words best describe Alex Jennings’s performance?

I liked him. The narrator for Books 1 ans 2 was excellent, but would have no problem listening to Alex

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Best Kept Secret?

Sebastions;s interaction with his principle / the Martinez episode

    "It's not too bad."

There have been some bad reviews about this book. I found it to be in line with Mr. Archer's others in the series and the performance was just as good. Remember, this is part of a series and there needs to be a build up for the story line. Trust me if you like the Clifton Chronicles this is a must.

    "Amazing!"

Alex Jennings is a gifted narrator. I'm enjoying this series for the richness of the stories, but Jennings adds a priceless touch to the experience.

"Another great book in the Clifton Chronicles"

Some reviewers complain when an author creates situations at the end of books that force you into continuing on in the series. With the Clifton Chronicles the author was quite clear that he intended to write at least five books covering the saga of Harry Clifton and family.
The author is an excellent story teller who creates an endless supply of situations that are both plausible and entertaining. You just can't put these books down or if you are listening to the audio version, you just can't bring yourself to hit the stop button.
Now, I'll ask "How many of you have reached the end of a great book and we're sad that it ended?" Well, if you said yes, I have great news. Get the Clifton Chronicles series. Think of the series as one very large book. You don't have to be sad about finishing one of the books as you know there is more to be enjoyed in the next book to follow.
Of course, with that said, I have yet to finish the series. I might be sad when I finish the last book, but I will have certainly enjoyed the ride. I hope you do too. I highly recommend this book and the series.
