Publisher's Summary

New York Times best seller Jeffrey Archer continues his beloved Clifton Chronicle series as Harry and Emma finally begin building a happy life - but a dangerous family enemy is about to resurface....

Best Kept Secret opens a moment after the end of The Sins of the Father, with the resolution of the trial and the triumphant marriage of Harry Clifton and Elizabeth Barrington, finally uniting their family. Harry, now a best-selling novelist; Emma; their son, Sebastian; and orphaned Jessica make a new life for themselves, but all is not as happy and secure as it could be. Emma's brother, Giles, is engaged to a woman who may be more interested in Barrington's fortune and title than in a long and happy marriage. And Sebastian, though he is bright, isn't quite the hard worker that his father was at school, and finds a hard time resisting the temptations that his somewhat unsavory friends provide.

It all comes to a head when a new villain is uncovered, a face from the past with grudges against both Harry and Giles - Fisher, who tortured Harry at school and later took credit for Giles' heroics during the war. Fisher teams up with Giles' now ex-wife to wreak havoc on Giles' latest election as well as meddle with affairs inside Barringtons, while Harry and Emma must deal with a new scheme that Sebastian has unwittingly fallen into with a supposed friend. The drama continues for Harry Clifton and his family, bringing this mesmerizing saga into the 1960s.

    "Archer phoned in this one..."

    Spoiler Alert!
Book number 3 was such a disappointment! This one lacked the feeling found in the first book of the series.
It came off as a book of underdeveloped short stories rather than a complete novel.
It also had parts of the storyline that just didn't make any sense. For instance, why was Bruno's father not arrested after they found the money, and why would Emma let Sebastian go out with Bruno when he just cost his dad 8 million pounds? That was kind of annoying.

"Third book, not as good as #2."
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

If you enjoyed the first two books, then - yes, read on...<br/>However, I read the first book and did not like it. I was told by friends to read on, and try the second book. I did, and I loved it. I was hooked. I read the third and I feel let down again. However, as urged the first time to read on... I will try the fourth. Very soap opera like themed books.

Would you be willing to try another book from Jeffrey Archer? Why or why not?

I am going to read #4 in the series. I have been told by friends to read on... and since I liked the second in the series so much, I will try to read on and follow the book series. Its like a soap opera where some segments are good, and some are not, but you develop a fondness for the characters so you continue to watch, and find your self hooked. for good or bad, you hooked. I find this series to be very mush like that feeling.

Have you listened to any of Alex Jennings’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Always a great narrator.

Was Best Kept Secret worth the listening time?

If you like the first and second book, then yes it does fit in with the series nicely. the ending is cliff hanger.

    Any additional comments?

The cliff hanger at the end is the only reason I will read the fourth in the series.

"Defintely not up to Jeffrey Archer standards"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Jeffrey Archer is one of the world's great storytellers. This book is third in the series of the Clifton Chronicles. I enjoyed very much the first two books. This one was a waste of time. Had Sir Jeffrey read this book after he wrote it, I think he would have rewritten "Best Kept Secret." This reads/sounds like some sort formula book. It is definitely way beneath his standards. I will definitely read/listen to the fourth book in the series. I presume it will be much better. If it isn't, then it will be the last I will listen to in the grouping as I feel I will not be missing anything.
