Publisher's Summary

Betrayal, war, and the risks of loyalty collide in the epic conclusion of the First Argentines series by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Lady’s Ransom.

Ransom Barton has served three Argentine kings. The new successor to the throne is the ruthless Jon-Landon, a fallible strategist when it comes to war. After losing against the Occitanian armies, the king forces Ransom to bear the blame and removes him from the council. But Jon-Landon isn’t yet through with humbling the honorable knight of Ceredigion.

When a retaliatory battle succeeds, Jon-Landon invites Ransom back into his circle. Though Ransom’s Fountain magic is made stronger by his fealty, he’s once again forced to make a terrible choice. And this time, Ransom’s wife, Claire, and their sons could pay the price for Ransom’s loyalty.

But as tensions between Ceredigion and Occitania reignite and alliances at court begin to crumble, a desperate Jon-Landon discovers his only ally is the knight he betrayed. With the future of Kingfountain hanging in the balance, Ransom agrees to help. And as secret enemies reveal their endgame, Ransom knows that he may have to make the ultimate sacrifice for the survival of the Argentine dynasty.

Critic Reviews

“The inevitable showdown between two Fountain-blessed antagonists brings this excellent four-part series to a close. Wheeler has woven a grand story based on the actual adventures of William Marshall in the time of King Stephen I of England, recasting the basic themes of King Arthur legends: loyalty and courage in the face of adversity.”Booklist

Two-Dimensional tedium

The writing, the characters and their interactions, everything about this story falls flat. I SEE it all happening but I'm not THERE. I'm constantly being told what Ransom and others are feeling and thinking, but I don't FEEL a thing. It's like watching a puppet show. The writing is so basic and uninspired it completely fails to breathe life into the characters or the story. Ransom's relationship with the Fountain comes off like a peculiar condition with physical symptoms; there is nothing profoundly mystical about it. The story is also painfully repetitive, our hero behaving like a doormat until the end, and then it's the end. The Epilogue was the highlight, and then it was way too little too late. In the author's earlier books, the writing and the sacred tradition with its ethical mystical spirit were truly engaging. This last book in the series feels rushed and tired at the same time.

I really love listening to these stories.

Takes me out of this world and into that one. I love going back in time to kings and queens and dukes and duchesses and so forth.

So pleased with every book in this series!

What a wonderful series! The battle scenes are so well done you can easily visualize the action and the characters and storyline are both captivating. When a book series draws you in to the point you get emotional and you don't want to finish the last one... I'd say it's a good one! I was not disappointed with this book.

I miss my Ransom

I just finished the last in this book series and already I miss my Lord Ransom. Ingeniously crafted through the writings of Jeff Wheeler, Ransom and Claire became an integral part of my decompression time driving home after work. I couldn't wait to listen daily. A well written action packed, intriguing, magical, and historical love story, it leaves the reader wanting for nothing no matter their age. Looking forward to the next series.

Least favorite

There were just too many constant battles and endless wars. It was hard to get through this series but made it to the end. I really like Jeff Wheeler’s stories but this was my least favorite.

Well written and clean. It is great to see a hero who holds to their convictions. Will be following this author.

Dex aie!

As the end of the game arrives, this series has shown that no good deed goes unpunished. For all his loyalty in the face of persistent opposition, Ransom remained true to himself but, in the end, was the cost worth it?

This was a series in a league of its own and I shall miss putting my pods in to listen to the sequence of plots and betrayals as they unfold. It had everything a compelling series should have and I would encourage anyone who has not listened, do so as you will not be disappointed.

Not very good

Big standard fantasy game scenario and poor narration. Accents and script are clunky. Not recommended
