End-of-life care - or assisted death

When her elderly patients start dying at home days after minor surgery, anesthesiologist Dr. Kate Downey wants to know why. The surgeon, not so much. “Old people die, that’s what they do,” is his response. When Kate presses, surgeon Charles Ricken places the blame squarely on her shoulders. Kate is currently on probation, and the chief of staff sides with the surgeon, leaving Kate to prove her innocence and save her own career. With her husband in a prolonged coma, it’s all she has left.

Aided by her eccentric Great Aunt Irm, a precocious medical student, and the lawyer son of a victim, Kate launches her own unorthodox investigation of these unexpected deaths. As she comes closer to exposing the culprit’s identity, she faces professional intimidation, threats to her life, a home invasion, and, tragically, the suspicious death of someone close to her. The stakes escalate to the breaking point when Kate, under violent duress, is forced to choose which of her loved ones to save - and which must be sacrificed.

Perfect for fans of Kathy Reichs and Tess Gerritsen

Medical Thriller!

I LOVE medical thrillers. This one did not disappoint. It is well written and medically accurate. It is an easy read since you won’t want to put it down. The characters are so lovable. I was rooting for a few of them! You get attached because they are written so well. The mystery of it will keep you picking the book up to see what has happened and why!

Excellent story

Very well written. Many layers of interesting life issues tackled. As a fellow female anesthesiologist, I enjoyed a pretty realistic depiction of our work world, and very clever plot development, involving the tools of our trade, and some of the tough ethical dilemmas. Likable protagonist, truly diabolical bad guys, with very believe-able narcissism! I will definitely recommend to doctor colleagues, but everyone will find something to enjoy about this story.

Outstanding medical thriller!

This was a very well written medical thriller that is hard to put down. I work in the medical profession and appreciated all the medical information. I think the terminology is explained well for those not familiar with medical terms and anesthesiology. I am an avid reader and this one is great! I highly recommend this book - very gripping and you can’t put it down!!

Listen to the end!

As a physician, much of this novel harkens back to my earlier days in medicine. I'm so grateful I haven't had to make these decisions. it's worth the read!
