Publisher's Summary

Coming of age as a Fat brown girl in a white Connecticut suburb is hard. Harder when your whole life is on fire, though.

Charlie Vega is a lot of things. Smart. Funny. Artistic. Ambitious. Fat.

People sometimes have a problem with that last one. Especially her mom. Charlie wants a good relationship with her body, but it's hard, and her mom leaving a billion weight loss shakes on her dresser doesn't help. The world and everyone in it have ideas about what she should look like: thinner, lighter, slimmer-faced, straighter-haired. Be smaller. Be whiter. Be quieter.

But there's one person who's always in Charlie's corner: her best friend Amelia. Slim. Popular. Athletic. Totally dope. So when Charlie starts a tentative relationship with cute classmate Brian, the first worthwhile guy to notice her, everything is perfect until she learns one thing - he asked Amelia out first. So is she his second choice or what? Does he even really see her? UGHHH. Everything is now officially a MESS.

A sensitive, funny, and painful coming-of-age story with a wry voice and tons of chisme, Fat Chance, Charlie Vega tackles our relationships to our parents, our bodies, our cultures, and ourselves.

Heartwarming and inspiring

Such a wonderful coming-of-age young adult tale. Couldn’t be sweeter and more accurate about the growing pains of finding your true self.

a Fantastic Read!

I LOVED listening to this book which says a lot as sometimes I find it hard to get into fiction. Wonderfully read and great characters!

Loved it.

Was like therapy for this fat brown Puerto Rican woman. I have NEVER seen myself in a character before this. How amazing for the young girl inside me.

The narration was engaging, tender , and delightful.

Melodrama and Teen Victory

I am giving this a lower rating, mostly because of the characters and their own self-pity. As a former teenager, I understand to a degree the relationship dynamics between beat friends and parents who may mean well or say things when lashing out, but towards the end I began to not like either the main character or her best friend. It was a good story with a typical romantic "girl gets the guy" despite putting him through hell. But the story was about friendship, self-acceptance, and of course love so it was a good bit of fluff. still, not my favorite book but good for a cute listen.

Fantastic performance & story

What a great story! Sometimes the relationship between Charlie and her mother hit a little close to home with how good was viewed, but is nice to know that other have those experiences. Occasionally, Charlie overdescribes a situation or an outfit, but I didn’t mind because she’s a writer and a fashionista so it’s totally in character for her to be doing so!

The narrator was FANTASTIC!! She developed unique voices for all the characters. The audio didn’t sound over-processed and it was almost like she was sitting in the car next to me.

Perfect balance of depth and light-heartedness

The narration is excellent! It was easy to pick up this up and hear the characters come alive! As a Latinx woman I LOVE that this book is in the universe. This is a book for ALL because Charlie is so relatable. I'm usually not a YA reader but I'm so glad I picked up this book. This is a one-day read because it is light-hearted and sweet. The perfect rom-com with depth!

fantastic story of insecurities, acceptance & love

I have so many thoughts, but this was amazing! Kind of everything I have wanted from a fat acceptance story. The bitter but not derogatory insecurities about our fatness, the constant comparison we do with others, learning to rise above it and learning to love oneself. Absolutely delightful and wonderful.
