  • Sacrifice Zones | Pony Morris | VOCAL KY | Harm Reduction | Sept. 22, 2024
    Sep 21 2024
Today’s show is the first in a series of follow-up programming that Sacrifice Zones will be teaming up with VOCAL Kentucky for. VOCAL stands for Voices of Community Activists and Leaders and is a program brought to our great city by Shameka Parrish-Wright and Jeremy Saunders. VOCAL-KY is building a movement of low-income people dedicated to ending the AIDS epidemic, the war on drugs, mass incarceration, and homelessness across the country. They fight for systemic change rooted in justice, compassion, and love. They approach this work with a firm belief in reducing harm and ending stigma, and the knowledge that the issues impacting our communities are driven by institutional oppression, not personal failings. Pony Morris is a community activist and leader representing VOCAL Kentucky and Pony came to the studio to introduce the concept of harm reduction for my audience. This show will feature some sound from that show. Harm reduction works by addressing broader health and social issues through improved policies, programs, and practices. Resources: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/harm-reduction Email VOCAL-KY: info@vocal-ky.org https://www.vera.org/publications/the-criminalization-of-poverty-in-kentucky Sacrifice Zones is hosted by Stretch and airs weekly on Sundays at 11am, Mondays at 8am, and Tuesdays at 2pm on Forward Radio WFMP-LP Louisville 106.5fm and livestreaming at https://forwardradio.org.

JD Vance first made news when he published his book Hillbilly Elegy in 2016, but he has since become a senator in Ohio and a vice presidential candidate. When his memoir came out, there were many people who had strong negative feelings about his book, namely other people from Appalachia who felt that he misrepresented them and their struggles. When JD Vance was selected as Donald Trump’s VP, we thought it might be a good time to look at some other Appalachia-related books that perhaps provide a fuller picture of the region, which spans 206,000 square miles, 423 counties, and six states. A region this large cannot be summed up by one person in one book. So our goal this week is to give you some diverse Appalachian voices to add to your TBR for a broader view of this region. • Sustainability Now! | Meghan Kontic | Glean KY | Sept 16, 2024
    Sep 16 2024
On this week’s program, your host, Justin Mog, heads out into the fields to glean inspiration and food for the hungry with Meghan Kontic, the North Central Field Coordinator for Glean Kentucky (https://gleanky.org). Glean Kentucky gathers and redistributes excess fresh fruits and vegetables to nourish Kentucky’s hungry. It was founded in 2010 by three individuals seeking to attack two problems: food waste and hunger. Recognizing that excess produce presented an opportunity to serve the large number of people needing food, they explored creative and effective ways to connect the two. By gleaning (aka, gathering) excess produce from farms, orchards, grocery stores, farmers markets and home gardens, Glean Kentucky reduces local food waste and provides fruits and vegetable for more than 100 feeding programs. Glean Kentucky produce is never sold and is intended only for members of our community facing food insecurity. Since inception, the organization has served as a vital link between local sources of food and dozens of feeding programs. They glean nearly a thousand times a year and yet they’ve just scratched the surface of diverting wasted food. As Glean Kentucky’s network of food sources and partners continues to grow, they’re expanding their reach across Central Kentucky. Both Meghan and Justin highly recommend you check out https://fallingfruit.org to find the best foraging opportunities in your neighborhood and to add sites to this great crowd-sourced map! As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! Sustainability Now! is hosted by Dr. Justin Mog and airs on Forward Radio, 106.5fm, WFMP-LP Louisville, every Monday at 6pm and repeats Tuesdays at 12am and 10am. Find us at https://forwardradio.org The music in this podcast is courtesy of the local band Appalatin and is used by permission. Explore their delightful music at https://appalatin.com
