Publisher's summary

Channel Two predicted a blanket of snow for Thanksgiving weekend - unusual, but not alarming for the little Maine island. What comes is a blinding blizzard, and a mass disappearance of nearly every person Robby Pierce knows. He and his family flee, trying to escape the snow and the invisible forces stealing people right from the street.

Miles away, Brad Jenkins battles the same storm. Alone, he attempts to survive as snow envelops his house. When the storm breaks, Brad makes his way south to where the snow ends and the world lies empty.

Join Brad, Robby, and the other survivors as they fight to find the truth about the apocalypse and discover how to live in their new world.

Great book.

I loved this book. I thought it would be a totally different story then it was. Loved the survivor story it developed into. Very happy that I went with my gut and got this book. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Ready For The Next! Audible Carry the Series!

My wife and I saw a show where they remodeled the cabin where the author wrote this creepy book. We decided to make this our nightly bedtime story for about a month.
We’d back it up the next night to the part where we fell asleep.
The author uses elements of basic structure that read like lines for a play, only to bloom into exposition and story telling that will chill your bones.
Fun book. Wish Audible carried the whole series.

A Global Apocalypse on a Cellular Level

An intriguing story of two concurrently told converging story lines, one starting "now", the other 6 months earlier. The way this was executed over the duration of the novel was actually quite unique and skilled.

The "Brad" story began 6 months prior, on the local discovery of a crazy vine, and the subsequent half-hearted secret government involvement in investigating the issue, during which Brad is sequestered by them in his home, and the sudden bewildering end of that involvement.

Robbie, a youth who with his family finds themselves in this new bio catastrophe, and very soon he finds himself alone.

In both cases, the leads are in the dark, alone, and with no idea what has gone on in the world, the extent of the issue, or the causes, or in fact what happened to everyone, and why not them.

On top of the situation, harsh weather is also in effect, making the journeys for answers even more difficult.

When Brad and Robbie meet up, there is a brief respite, where we discover other survivors, and Robbie has established himself and is revealed to be somewhat of a savant and has been speculating and planning on the cause and solution to the apocalypse. The story then progresses to action.

The story was a welcome relief in apocalyptic tales. As the survivors were survivors by accident or circumstance, they were all more or less who they were, rather than hardened survivors of a hard struck survival, so weren't just hard. morally grey. The story wasn't devoid of bad people, but they weren't, as in so many apocalyptic tales, the primary focus. The book was a one and done, nice and contained, and ends on a high note.

Narration was easy listening, and clear and did well on the character voices.

Note that I did get this audiobook free in exchange for an unbiased review. Note also that I did already own the kindle edition of this, and was wanting the audio of it so it was an easy choice.

Definitely a recommended book!

it's odd but couldn't turn it off.

picked this up for a raodtrip and couldn't tell if I liked it or hated it till about half way through. its good, just not what I was really expecting. I really wish they would do an audio version for the rest of the books.

Extinct?

I really enjoyed the start of the story. Several good characters are in this story that are well developed. Robbie's solo journey was also quite good, but the story became muddled for me with the addition of so many under explained monsters. It just seemed to be too much thrown in one story without proper explanation. The narrator did a great job with so many characters. I enjoyed his voice, it made listening to a long story nice. I received this audio book for free for an honest review.

Enjoyable, Easy Listen

This was just a nice, easy read/listen. The narration was good (to the point that I didn't have to think about narrator or his narration).
It was pretty easy to identify with the characters and keep track of them.
I requested this book and received it promising a review. Overall, the story is solid. You do have to "buy in" to a couple of the theories of a main character even though his explanation / analysis of the situation isn't explored as deeply (especially the connection of multiple events and how they lead the agreed-upon solution.
I would read another book from the author.

Not bad. Still unanswered questions for future books.

This book was given to me for free at my request, and I provided this voluntary review.

Robbie and his family are on the hunt for help (and for meaning) after mass amounts of people have mysteriously disappeared.

The oddest part of the book is when peoples' families start dying, and no one seems alarmed or even sad. It definitely makes the beginning not feel realistic.

The rest of the book however had me wondering how the two plots converged and if they would be able to solve the mystery of what happened to everyone and why those left behind were able to survive.

One of my favorite authors

I love how Mr. Hamill writes and this book is no exception. The plot develops slowly, sucking you in until food and sleep don't matter-- you have to find out what happens! This is one of those audiobooks that you will listen to again, to catch the subtle clues that end up meaning so much. Highly recommend!
