Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Expectation, by Anna Hope.

Hannah, Cate and Lissa are young, vibrant and inseparable. Living on the edge of a common in East London, their shared world is ablaze with art and activism, romance and revelry - and the promise of everything to come. They are electric. They are the best of friends.

Ten years on, they are not where they hoped to be. Amidst flailing careers and faltering marriages, each hungers for what the others have. And each wrestles with the same question: what does it take to lead a meaningful life?

Expectation is a novel of the highs and lows of friendship - how it can dip, dive and rise again. It is also about finding your way: as a mother, a daughter, a wife, a rebel. Most of all, it explores that liminal space between expectation and reality, the place - full of dreams, desires and pain - in which we all live our lives.

Sublime

This book will haunt you in between listens and have you cherishing and swaddling your female friendships. The narrator is wonderful, too.

What a wonderful book

This book was mentioned on the podcast the high low as I looked through the list of books the girls recommended this one caught my eye.
I just loved it. How Anna hope discusses real life with all its problems is just so exact it’s just so real.
I loved it and would thoroughly recommend it. Bravo Anna hope.

Tender yet gripping

I loved this book. The characters are all relatable, raw and challenging. The twists and turns of the story portray how life plays out how it wants, not how you want. It was strangely reassuring and hopeful.

Exquisite

I have no idea what I was expecting from this book, other than it was another Sally Rooney-esque, millennial take on growing up. I’m pretty sure this book tops anything Miss Rooney will do in the next decade or so however, as the author is older and wiser and has actually lived to see what’s on the other side of being young and carefree (or young and traumatised). The story of the three main protagonists is full of wonder, pathos, regret and beauty. The author has drawn the most exquisite picture of moving from youth to middle-age. It should be compulsory reading for everyone from 25 to 45.

Perfect

Such a lovely book! I listened to it in just two days, the characters are compelling and the story so real and raw. A really immersive novel, Anna Hope has a touch that I feel is rare (:

The characters are awful and selfish and its basically a book about boring posh woman problems.

So disappointed with the narration.

I think If I had read this book I would have enjoyed it more than the audible version .I felt as though the narrator was quite half hearted in her reading, the dialogue between the characters was done well, but the rest was read in a very monotonous tone .I finished, but it was a struggle. Disappointing.

Reader over acted so much I couldn’t continue listening

Her tone was so somber, listening made me feel depressed. The outline of the story sounded good, but I couldn’t get more than 15 mins in.

Great writing

The story was beautifully written, but there was something about the narration that I found to be quite heavy going and a bit too intense for me.
