Publisher's Summary

A haunting, edge-of-your-seat debut psychological thriller about a woman who has been institutionalized for a heinous crime, and the psychiatrist assigned to her case who must uncover the truth beneath the madness.

How close do you get before it’s too late...?

Working as a dedicated forensic psychiatrist for many years, Emma is not shocked so easily. Then she is assigned to work with Connie, a wife and mother accused of a despicable crime. Connie is suffering from dissociative amnesia - or at least seems to be.

Now it is up to Emma to decide whether Connie can stand trial for her sins. But there is something about Connie that inexorably pulls Emma into her orbit. Perhaps it is the way she seems to see right through Emma, speaking to Emma’s deepest insecurities about her life, marriage, and her own tragic past. And soon Emma begins to understand how Connie’s complicated marriage and toxic relationship with her beautiful best friend Ness could have driven Connie to snap - or maybe, she is simply getting too close to a woman who is unforgivable…

Alternating between the two women’s points of view, before and after Connie’s breakdown, Too Close is a masterfully written riveting listen about the powerful - yet dangerous - closeness between women.

Absolutely worth it!

I often go back and forth, between reading books myself, and listening to Audible; many times, I’ll forgo an Audible version of a book I am excited or interested in, because of a narrator (Some people should NOT be reading anything aloud IMO). This books 2 narrators were absolutely fantastic. Both were able to convey specific mannerisms, of each character, and it was truly enjoyable.
The story itself would have also, completely captured me, had I read it on my own. The author did a great job at diving into each characters personal stories, dark and sarcastic humor, in the case of Connie; and a more timid and cautious personality, in the case of Emma.
Both women had their own internal wounds, and battle scars, from life having its way with them.
I absolutely enjoyed every bit of the book. And I will absolutely keep this author on my list of those, I’ll look forward to reading more of, in the future.

Maybe I’m twisted but...I devoured this book!

I’m not sure if the fact that I “felt” this book so much says more about me or about the book, but I felt so thoroughly moved and entertained. It was pretty dark, but at the same time, the story and the narrator did such a good job of bringing humor into it. There are some thrillers that awkwardly incorporate funny lines, but in my opinion, this one hit the nail on the head every time. It was also deeply sad in a way that made you think about how fast time goes and how much can change in the blink of an eye. But even more so, how much changes gradually when you are not even aware. But there is also a note of positivity and hope that almost any tragedy can be recovered. I would recommend this book!

UNDERWHELMING

I was SO eager to start this book after all the positive reviews... I am three hours in to the audible and SUPER bored.
Absolutely nothing "thrilling" about it.. It is so incredibly slow and the transition of narrators and POVs is somewhat confusing and unnecessary. Time is wasted on a lot of dialog between characters, and not enough time spent in emotion or unveiling the mystery. The narrator(s) are not as engaging as I hoped and the story really isn't all that well written or organized.
I'm not even sure that I will finish it... I read some other low rated reviews and they say that it never get better. Huge let down.

SOOOOOO GOOD

Don't pass on this one.... it's so well done! Bravo to the author for humanizing mental disorders and breakdowns, which can happen to anyone under the right, or wrong, circumstances. I loved these characters and their stories!!

Kept my interest...

The best part of this audiobook is the stellar narration. The way the narrator portrayed the main character was fabulous. The story itself is definitely interesting and will likely hold your attention, but I found the ending to be rather an anticlimax. The whole book describes a woman on the brink of insanity who is accused of attempted murder of her daughter and another child,, and her assigned psychiatrist who is trying to figure out if this woman is fit to stand trial. I kept waiting for a big plot twist to blow me away but it never came. The story just kind of ends...just...meh. Oh well, it was a credit well spent.

Loved it, though..

I really love this book. It had me laughing out loud throughout the whole thing. I could see how it was sort of a darker book, but certainly wouldn’t consider it a “thriller”.

Brilliant

I read a lot of books but am seldom moved to review. It’s not a whodunnit even though it was listed under mysteries but so much more! Clever dialogue, even witty at times. This may sound odd given the subject matter but this is life. We’re all kidding ourselves if we think our entire world can’t come crashing down around us if the right dominos fall at the right time. Great read across the board!

The narration was fantastic

I don’t often leave reviews but I enjoyed this one so much I had too. I’m not sure I would consider it a thriller per say, but it was very entertaining. The narration was fabulous. Probably the best I’ve heard. It really brought this book to life. Would recommend!
