Publisher's summary

From the bestselling author of Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone, a fiendishly fun locked room (train) murder mystery that "offers a tip of the hat to the great Agatha Christie novel while at the same time being a modern reinvention of it" (Nita Prose) -- perfect for fans of Richard Osman and Anthony Horowitz

When the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society invited me to their crime-writing festival aboard the Ghan, the famous train between Darwin and Adelaide, I was hoping for some inspiration for my second book. Fiction, this time: I needed a break from real people killing each other. Obviously, that didn’t pan out.

The program is a who’s who of crime writing royalty:

the debut writer (me!)

the forensic science writer

the blockbuster writer

the legal thriller writer

the literary writer

the psychological suspense writer

But when one of us is murdered, the remaining authors quickly turn into five detectives. Together, we should know how to solve a crime.

Of course, we should also know how to commit one.

How can you find a killer when all the suspects know how to get away with murder?

Editorial Review

All aboard!
I wanted to go on an outrageous, thrilling, yet fun ride with my first listen of 2024, and Everyone on This Train Is a Suspect delivered! As soon as I read the premise I thought, yes, put me on a train with a group of mystery writers, agents, publishers, editors, and fans as we journey from Darwin to Adelaide to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Australian Mystery Writers’ Society. Of course, someone onboard ends up dead. Which expert sleuth will figure it out first? Whodunit? This is where the fun is. A telltale sign of a good story: As soon as I finished, I immediately downloaded Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone—where author Benjamin Stevenson first introduces his main character, Ernest Cunningham. I hear there might be a movie or TV show coming (rights have been secured), and I sure hope a third novel is in the works. —Tricia F., Audible Editor

Can we get more mysteries that follow the 10 rules?

In a time overrun with unreliable narrators (I can’t remember the last BOTM Club choice where the book description didn’t list “unreliable narrator” in the overview) it is refreshing to have a mystery we can listen to (or read) that fairly shares clues to logically arrange providing a slight chance to solve it before the final reveal. It makes mystery reading FUN again.
The clever way clues are dropped make this book un-put-down-able!

Fun mystery, great performance

The performance is just fantastic, soothing but entertaining voice. I even listened to the acknowledgements. The accents have improved since the last book, too, which is nice to hear.

As for the story, I think it's just as good as the first one. Dry humor, but it hits just right. The mystery was compelling and the explanation at the end was very clever. I also appreciated the empathy Stevenson showed to his characters and the very real issues they go through. 10/10

Another disappointment

There’s so much I wanted to like about this one. The setting, the meta humor…but unfortunately I found this one disappointing as I did with the first book. Plotting was oddly paced and characters felt flat. The audiobook narrator is just OK - unfortunately awful with the Scottish and Irish accents - and didn’t add much to the experience.

Love!

Absolutely love the excellent & very well developed characters, I have laughed aloud listening to rhis book and the 1st one. Ern Cunningham is...were he real. i would hope he'd be my friend. How the author and the actor make murder so hilarious is beyond me but please, keep it up! Can't wait for the third in this series to appear! If you like a surprising & modern mystery written in the old school style, enjoy this book! I finished it in one day!

The location of the book

There were numerous characters and at times you had to pay strict attention to who was bein referred to by the author. Quite a good listen.

Clever writing

I enjoyed the clever and humorous word play in this book- I wish that it was linger because it was enjoyable. I didnt realize that there was one before this one. So, I am going to download it too. The narrator has a pleasant voice.
