Conservative, reactionary, and ultimately unhelpful account of crimes
This pro death penalty account of these awful crimes, which also comes out against parole, is so tone deaf— I hope people realize they are getting their emotions played for deeply questionable politics. In the racist policing system, these extreme stories are told as a way to justify harsher punishments. Hughes wasn’t even paroled! But we know from the work of innocence project, many of those who have been sent to death row only to proven innocent (sometimes after their death), show that although these systems are imperfect, we need to think seriously about how to actually stop these crimes from happening and it’s not ending parole. It is taken seriously why the US has so much gender based violence compared to other countries even while we have locked up huge swathes of the population. This would involve cultural changes that feminists and prison abolitionists have put forth for decades. This story did not need to demonize parole or the lack of death penalty to do justice to the victims. Disgusting, ideologically violent and conservative. True crime at its best looks at the cultural situations that give rise to violence, tells the story of the lives of the victims, and looks at the ways that our criminal justice system ultimately fails us all.
