When Gunnar Long is transported into the first fully-immersive virtual MMORPG, he finds himself in a new world filled with magic, mystery, and adventure.

No more 9-to-5 job. No more studio apartment. No more reality TV.

Finally, he's in a place where he can call home, a place with people he can call friends.

But as more people want to trade their real world lives to get inside Eden's Gate, the government of the outside world wants the "game" shut down at all costs.

Gunnar must learn to survive, grow in power, and find a way to send a message back to his old home.

"We're fine. We're alive. Eden's Gate is real."

Eden's Gate is a LitRPG adventure.

LitRPG means Literary Role Playing Game. Simply put, it’s the book version of watching someone play a video game, usually one that’s set up like an MMO (massively multiplayer online) RPG. It’s a blend of sci-fi and fantasy, depending on how it comes to be that our main character ends up living inside a virtual reality. the point of LitRPG is not how we get there, but that we get to be in this virtual reality period, living life as a badass video-game character. Beat the grind and submerse yourself in these addictive LitRPGs.

for such a avid gamer, poor judgment screwing over npc's for greed, he should know better, what was he thinking

smh

There are some issues. The author has a novel premise for the rpg world and there are a lot of great aspects of this book. There are also some problems and some things that are annoying. The problems are mostly with incorrect word choice. The author repeatedly uses adjectives in a way that Inigo Montoya would take issue with. Very often he uses a word that sounds like the appropriate word for a situation rather than the correct word.

The annoying parts are the same ones plaguing so many LitRPG novels that someone should make a gif meme for them... the main character is supposed to be a guy who spends every second of his free time gaming, but who makes noob mistakes so often that it pulls you out of the story and makes you face palm and want to shake the author.

Also, the main character is constantly slow on the uptake, which is just annoying. I can't decide whether to feel like my intelligence is being insulted or if the author has just read too many of the inexplicably popular LitRPG books that feature a similarly moronic MC.

Then there's the other trope where every single female the MC encounters is sooooooo hot. And he just can't stop staring at them like a 13 year old sex addict. This always feels like an uncomfortable window into the author's either creepy or just plain sad sexual fantasies and/or hang-ups.

C'mon Fantasy genre authors... let's try to show the world that not everyone who knows how to min/max a character sheet is also a sexually naive, furiously masturbating, 13-year-old boy, trapped in an over-weight, bearded man's body.

The last issue is that the main character is either a bit of a sociopath or he has a mild form of autism. The author gives a few sentences of background that point to a rough childhood, but otherwise his odd behavior is just passed off on his belief that he is a loner. Mostly it just feels like a ham-handed way of showing some personal and moral growth over the course of the book. It's annoying.

That said I think the positives make up for the negatives in this case. I have not found that to be true very often when other books have these flaws. The author even refrains from including entirely unnecessary and poorly scripted sex scenes which was a total relief. So I recommend you give it a try.

I have listened to book two and while the MC is still making dumb-ass mistakes, the bad is outweighed by the good again. The plot is interesting enough that I will buy the third book as well. Just keep your expectations in line with a 3-4 star LitRPG novel and you won't be disappointed.

Worth the credit, but...

So I enjoyed the story, and all but I can see where some have marked the story down as not the best of the genre.
This story misses some things, like the characters are not as focused as any gamer would be on the things we expect such as leveling and epic loot.
I mean what gamer easily gives up any kind of epic loot?

Any way, it was still good.

Proczko gave a great performance and really pulled in some of the story’s down-slide, exceptionally well.
Bravo to him.

Worth a 5 to me, but it’s probably for reasons outside of easily explained more like a 3.5 to anyone not hard up for the LitRPG stories like I am.

Worth the listen anyway you swing it.
Enjoy.

Edens Gate, The Reborn

I grew up gaming on pc through mmorpg’s, this makes me feel like I’m in one. The book starts well, and even with some slight flaws it’s all around a great introduction into the genre of Lit RPG’s. The way Brody shows how current gamers think and talk is a great reflection on the current MMORPG gaming these genres come from. Then writing and story improves even more as the next books have been written, so give him a chance to immerse you in Edens Gate.

Quite True to MMORPG players

Blatant objectification of women.
Use of slang that is arguably racist.
Characters don’t interact realistically

Decent story, poor character personality
