Publisher's summary

Continue the Frith Chronicles with the second audiobook, Dread Pirate Arcanist!

While protecting the newborn griffins on the Isle of Landin, Volke Savan and his adopted sister, Illia, run afoul of the Dread Pirate Calisto, the same cutthroat who carved out Illia’s right eye. As a master manticore arcanist, Calisto’s strength and brutality are unrivaled, so when Illia suggests they bring him to justice, Volke wonders if they’ll have what it takes to fight the corsairs on the high seas.

A fast-paced flintlock fantasy for those who enjoy How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell, Unsouled (Cradle Series) by Will Wight, and Percy Jackson, and the Olympians by Rick Riordan.

Absolutely enrapturing

I love how pirates and magical creatures can be wrapped into one amazing novel. The narrator definitely did this book an amazing service! This audiobook was amazing!!!

New favorite aeries?

I love these books, I've listened to both 1 and 2 in one week and will be starting the next one tomorrow.
The performance was so much better in this one than the first, you can tell Brian Wiggins is putting his all in each story.
The only reason I gave it a 4 star review is simply because whenever Brian acts out the plagued beasts I can't help but think of Mark Hamill's Joker, and it sounded as though he mispronounced broken ( yes I listened multiple times to be sure) towards the end of the book.
Other than that I'll be pre-ordering book 4 and can't wait to see where the adventure leads.

Already looking forward to the next book

I read book 1 as a recommendation and mostly enjoyed it. Enough to read book 2 and I'm so glad I did! This was a super fun book that pulls you in and doesn't let you go.

Great descriptive language!

Shami Stovall’s second book in the Frith Chronicles is full of action and further character development of the main protagonists and villains. We learn of several types of mystical creatures and their unique abilities. The description of this fictional world is scattered throughout the fast paced story using picturesque prose, metaphors and similes. Several questions about the characters were answered, but others were left unanswered, which draws you in to reading the next book in the series. Well done!

A good story

narrator does a good job with bringing the story to life. not a fan of the Illia and Zaxis relationship but it's a minor part so doesn't affect much.

Great fantasy and whimsical title

Loved it! it's like Dungeons and Dragons meets Pokemon or Harry Potter. Both this title and the first so far are amazing!

Great World Building and Characters Continue

Shami Stovall shows us more of this great world, magic system, and characters with excellent depth and complexity. You can understand and believe why characters do things, even when those things aren't in their own best interests. As with book 1, I feel this depth helps the book be a much more immersive experience. This volume in the series has adventure, peril, and growth. The only addition I would hope for, is a bit more advancement of the series story line. However, I think it likely this was an intentional choice to focus more on character development, as that was a consistent theme here.

Great job by Brian here with the narration. It seemed like he was having more fun with the narration. There was good energy and distinctly different characters. Without slipping into spoiler territory, I can say there's a point where he almost seems to channel Joker from the Batman Animated Series. Narration certainly made a positive impact here.

I received this audiobook for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Pfft this book was great

This book had almost none of the problems the first book had and was just as compelling. You can actually see Shami improving as an author from the first book to this book.

This book is full of character development and fleshing out backstories, each of the characters gets a little more real, and a little more likable. Some of Volke and Illia's behavior drive me nuts. The romantic subplot is done well enough, but still infuriating in the way watching children trying to figure out romance is bound to be.

The adventure was great, pirate hunting, treasure seeking, running for their lives all very exciting stuff. This crew of junior Arcanists keeps throwing themselves into the mix with stupidly over powered enemies and barely surviving.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review.

Just keeps getting better!

Shami has created a second book to rival the first in the series. Hence, we see much more character development, world building, and powerful enemies both new and old. I particularly enjoyed learning about how and why the magic ecosystem worked the way it does. Brian Wiggins continues to master the narration and deliver a powerful performance! Throw in some realistic teenage problems and issues, and lessons learned, and you have a thrilling and engaging book you can't stop listening too. I must admit I found myself driving extra around the block to so I could finish a chapter.
