Dealing with your ex-husband, who can't seem to show up reliably for weekends with the kids; navigating a workplace fraught with office politics or racial tensions; saying "I'm sorry" or "I love you."
We all have difficult conversations, no matter how confident or competent we are. And too often, no matter what we try, things don't go well. Should you say what you're thinking and risk starting a fight? Swallow your views and feel like a doormat? Or should you let them have it? But - what if you're wrong?
Difficult Conversations shows you a way out of this dilemma; it teaches you how to handle even the toughest conversations more effectively and with less anxiety. Based on 15 years of work at Harvard Negotiation Project and consultations with thousands of people, the authors answer the question: When people confront the conversations they dread the most, what works?
Difficult Conversations walks you through a proven, concrete, step-by-step approach for understanding and conducting tough conversations. It shows you how to get ready, how to start the conversations in ways that reduce defensiveness, and how to keep the conversation on a constructive track regardless of how the other person responds.
Whether you're dealing with your baby-sitter or biggest client, your boss or your brother-in-law, Difficult Conversations can help.

Featured Article: How to Improve Your Communication Skills
Knowing how to communicate is one of the most important life skills you can learn, but unfortunately, most of us don't ever receive formal lessons on the topic. Being a good communicator is essential to all aspects of our professional, personal, and romantic lives, so it's important to take the time to evaluate how you communicate, identify areas of improvement, and then strive to apply these lessons in your daily life.

BOY, AM I GLAD I DID!
The authors read this, and at first they seem dry and without energy. But their content lured me in. I've learned more in four hours of listening that I have in 20 years of self-help books on active listening and communicating with people.
If you have ever struggled to have a good conversation with a spouse, child, co-worker, or boss, this is worth listening to. I am getting ready to start my second time through.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Decent content, yet though a little corny at times. How did the narrator detract from the book?
One of the male voices was so monotone and boring it was painful. The conversation skits were as if they were purposefully trying to read slow and clumsy.Did Difficult Conversations inspire you to do anything?
Write a review.TERRIBLE NARRATION!!!!!

Where does Difficult Conversations rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is far and away the best, most complete book on how to approach and manage conflict and discussions most of us would rather avoid. It confronts all aspects of "difficult conversations" and gives valuable tips and tools for getting through them better. I come back to this book all the time. I can't live without it.What was one of the most memorable moments of Difficult Conversations?
Douglas Stone has the gentlest voice and is perfect for the Emotions section. The dramatized conversation at the end is fantastic.Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. This was a first, I was skeptical. I usually prefer one voice in a book, but this was very well done. What insight do you think you’ll apply from Difficult Conversations?
I think the best advice is to "turn UP the volume" on your feelings. Listening to your feelings and having a conversation with yourself before engaging in a tough talk is great advice.Any additional comments?
These people are the best. The Harvard Negotiation Project has done a great service in writing these books. This is profound work and a pretty great audiobook, too.If you only buy one one book on conflict...

Would you listen to Difficult Conversations again? Why?
Yes, I would because even though it shows the examples on a very simple way, sometimes maybe too simple, it reminds us of some basic principals that make the difference.Simple, direct, good.
