As a child, Hester Wyatt escaped slavery, but now the dark-skinned beauty is a member of Michigan's Underground Railroad, offering other runaways a chance at the freedom she has learned to love.

When one of her fellow conductors brings her an injured man to hide, Hester doesn't hesitate...even after she is told about the price on his head. The man in question is known as the "Black Daniel", a vital member of the North's Underground Railroad network. But Hester finds him so rude and arrogant, she begins to question her vow to hide him.

Galen Vachon is a member of one of the wealthiest free black families in New Orleans. He has turned his back on the lavish living he is accustomed to in order to provide freedom to those who are enslaved in the South. However, as he heals, he cannot turn his back on Hester Wyatt; he is determined to make this gorgeous and intelligent woman his own. Yet there are traitors to be discovered and slave catchers to be evaded before Hester and Galen can find the freedom that only true love can bring.

Contains mature themes.

Loved the story. Suspenseful. A lot of history interwoven in the story. You will love Hester and Galen's story. Struggled with the voice of Galen. The voice of Galen was awful. The narrator made him sound like such a wimp, instead of the deep sultry voice that the author intended. Would have preferred more creole French. However, I still loved the story.

Indigo has always been my favorite book of all times. It was actually also the first romance book I have ever read. I just listen to the book again and it truly made me appreciate Beverly Jenkins great ability to capture history, romance and suspense. I look forward to more books like these from Ms Jenkins.

I have ever read. I am left breathless.

The story intrigingly wove a story of love, strength, perseverance and courage. Also, it such a joy to have a heroine like Hester. I so look forward to reading more of Ms. Jenkins novels.

The woman reading has just the right voice for this story. Her voice brought you into Hester’s world.

Sometimes I would forget it was during the time of slavery but I was still enjoyable. The story of Gatlin & Hester is a love story.

I highly recommend this book. There is lots of exciting “passion”. Girls it will ignite your senses too.

Great story. But needed a real French brother to voice Galen and his family.

This book was the first one I read by Beverly Jenkins, and I have gone on to read several others since. It's been a long time since I read it, but I can say that anyone who wants historical romance with an American setting should love this book. It might be my favorite of hers.

I wish the narrators voice could have been a bit more warmer. Her sounded robotic. I didn't like her French accent.
