Publisher's summary

Germany, AD 1499:

The Renaissance is dawning over Europe. Ideas of freedom and science shake the foundations of medieval society. New worlds in the West open unprecedented opportunities for Europe and its oppressed people.

Demuth, the successful but eccentric apothecary of a small village in the German mountains, knows little about these developments...until she is forced to flee from a witch hunt and must leave her protected life for good.

With Hal by her side and a pouch of opium around her neck, Demuth learns that the world is much bigger than she had ever imagined.

Join her adventure into the unknown.

Middle ages tale of a woman healer & her dog

I really loved this book especially because it immerses you in the struggles that a woman healer would have living in Europe at that time, especially with all of the witch hysteria. Really brings to life the smells, sights, lifeways and people of the towns, villages and lands controlled by feudal lords before countries like Germany were unified. I don't want to give any spoilers but you can see some problems that people still struggle with today in this book which makes the story relevant now. The main character's big dog companion is a wonderful touch. The story moves along quickly and I didn't want it to end. I wish there was a sequel.
