Publisher's summary

First, the flash. A glare of light, just before dawn, followed by utter darkness. A vast blanketing nothingness that covers the whole Earth. Then, the disappearances begin. Friends and strangers alike, swallowed by the darkness…. A lucky few are returned, but they are altered, changed. For the people of Jesman’s Bend, it feels like the end of the world. But this is only the very start.

Couldn't get through it

I only made it a quarter of the way into the novel before putting it down. I was put off by the level of detail in the history of the characters. There was simply too much of it. The book starts off by telling you what has happened then spends an extensive amount of time talking about the past and thoughts of the people it's introducing you to without telling you why. I was disappointed by how far I got into the novel without it giving you more information about the event the books is supposedly revolving around. I know this is the start of the series and such books often start out slow in order to introduce you to it's players, but this one took it too far for me to put up with. I'm not big on books that try to cram an entire person's history into your face before getting to the actual story. I prefer getting to know characters by their personality being spread out and interspersed with the actual story.

A little slow to start

Good combo of King and Koontz...at first I thought it was based on the "Left Behind" series, bright light..poof... most people gone, some are left. But the vanished come back but are dangerously changed. The story is a little slow to start but then picks up some steam and maintains a steady pace. Narrator does a good job. The survivors are tough but I think a little slow to catch on to the enemyy's weakness'. I liked it tho and am looking forward to more.

Great Listen

This story has a very interesting concept of all people, with the exception of a few who disappear from the world. Yet some of those people come back, but who they once were are gone. This story is about the very survival of humanity. Book 1 has set the stage. I can't wait to listen to book 2. The narrator, Luke Daniels is one my favorites. I think he does a fabulous job of telling the story through the different characters.

Should have saved my time

I thought this book would have a plot. Basically the reading was well done, but the story lacked everything.
