Publisher's Summary

When young priest Nicolas Chatry took his vows, he thought the hardest thing he’d have to deal with was accomplishing his duties from a wheelchair. Until a murderer steps into the confessional. Unable to recognize the voice or maneuver quickly enough to get a look at the killer, Nicolas has no way of identifying who admitted to such a horrific deed. And even if he did, his vows prevent him from telling anyone about it.

Unable to live with the knowledge that a predator is walking the streets of New Orleans, Nicolas breaks his vows and hires Shaye to do the impossible - find the killer before he strikes again.

Count on DeLeon for continually writing the Best..

This is such a good book, series, author... This is book #7 in the Shaye Archer series. Although not necessary I would suggest listening to the series in order for continuity of character development.
The publisher's summary gives a very good overview of the first maybe two chapters.
What happens following a killers confession is a fast paced story of lies and deceit. Shaye and boyfriend /police investigator Jackson are unknowingly working on the same case. One woman murdered, another abducted and a priest is being threatened. The longer this story goes on the more suspects with motives are revealed.
About half way through the book I had my suspicions but they weren't confirmed until the very end.
Julie McKay does an outstanding job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Jana DeLeon is incredible!

Jana DeLeon has released 3 audio novels recently, two in her light and fun Miss Fortune mystery series and DAMNED in her rather dark Shaye Archer mystery series. All three have rated solid 5 stars.

Good Story, Great Narration.

This has been a good series. I have enjoyed it. I don't think this was my favorite book but still an entertaining listen.

I liked the story line and plot. It did seem like Shaye Archer was actually not the star of this book to me.

It was a good mystery and the villain was a psycho for sure. There is a lot of dialogue throughout the entire book, which was great.

As for the narration it was great! I really liked it. Julie McKay does a great job with all the voices and the male voices. Everyone gets their own distinct voice. She has a nice reading voice too.

Good Shay Archer

Mediocre story but the narrator makes the men sound like they are whining . Very annoying.

One of the better Shaye Archer books

I highly recommend the Shaye Archer books by Jana DeLeon The Miss Fortune series is much more lighthearted but great as well . Damned was excellent as it was not quite as dark as some of the previous Shaye Archer books. Jana DeLeon always makes me feel as if I were an observer in the scenes that play out. If you love Louisiana, her books are a must read.

Aren't confessionals sacred

Jana DeLeon delivers another great Shaye Archer story. Shaye discovers leads from the smallest amount of information. She does it again here. A junior priest, Nicolas Chatry, hears a confession to a murder and struggles with ethic of betraying the confessional. He settles on hiring Shaye to find the penitent. Shaye only knows that it was a male penitent and there were male workers in the gardens. Yet, it is enough to discover possible threats to Nicolas.

After the explosive discovery in the previous book, that the chief of police was involved in wrong-doing in an investigation dealing with Shaye, her and Jackson cannot share information. I was interested to find how they were going to refraine from sharing information. We know that Jackson and Shaye’ cases will converge at some point. It was engaging to discover how.
Jackson is investigating a missing teen case. A straight “A” student goes missing and there are many obvious suspects, a bad-boy boyfriend, a jealous girlfriend and an over-bearing father. All leads are a dead end.

Elenore and Corrine, Shaye’s former psychiatrist and mother do not have much to do in this story, except for the excellent dinner Corrine prepares.

As Nicolas struggles with what he was told in the confessional, he is now being stalked by the penitent. The mysterious black clad man without a face turns up at the most unexpected places. Nicolas is petrified and defenseless in his wheelchair.
Shaye is still looking for answers to her life i.e. what happen to her baby. At the end we see that she has found her confidence to explore the next level of her relationship with Jackson.
It was an engaging story
