“Easily Jack Carr’s most ambitious and best realized book yet, a scintillatingly seminal tale with echoes of Le Carre, Forsythe, and Ludlum.” —BookTrib

From the “hottest author on the thriller scene today” (
The Real Book Spy), #1 New York Times bestselling author Jack Carr brings the worlds of special operations and CIA paramilitary units into direct collision in the jungles of Vietnam with his explosive new thriller introducing young Navy SEAL Tom Reece, a man torn between the blurred lines and allegiances of the military and the increasingly murky world of intelligence. This is how it all began...

1968. A time of division. A time of civil unrest. A time of war.

Just before the Tet Offensive, before President Johnson announces he will not run for reelection, before the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy, as riots and protests rage across the nation, a spy ship is captured by communist forces off the coast of North Korea.

The crew thought they had destroyed everything of intelligence value. They were wrong.

As a KGB “illegal” elicits information from a high-ranking NSA official, and teams of special operators infiltrating into Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam disappear without a trace, an ambitious Soviet advisor launches an ingenious plan that could forever alter the world balance of power.

Tom Reece, a SEAL operator attached to the highly classified and shadowy MACV-SOG is about to be thrust into a bloody battle to discover the truth.

From the Kremlin to the White House, from the streets of Saigon to the rugged A Shau Valley, along the paths of Ho Chi Minh Trail and into the secret war in Laos, Navy SEAL Tom Reece has an official mission assigned by Military Assistance Command, Vietnam-Studies and Observations Group, but it’s his unofficial mission that might get him killed.

From “master novelist” (Ballistic) Jack Carr comes a fast-paced and brutally realistic thriller, one that will make you question all you thought you knew about Vietnam, pressing “emotional buttons that other writers wouldn’t dare explore” (The Real Book Spy).

I'm mot a bookworm but I find the combination of Carr's writing and Porter's reading irresistible. and this one may be the best yet.
I need this Amazon Prime mini series yesterday!!!!

Carr brings back the Vietnam triller!!!!

Another instant classic.

I am blown away at the detail regarding Saigon following Tet. My father was a Vietnam vet, and I have peripheral knowledge of the country and culture, but to see this level of detail from a contemporary author is absolutely mind boggling.

You can smell the streets, you can smell the jungle and for some reason I really want to go get a Rolex.

Jack Carr has upped his game again, and as an avid reader of the thriller genre for many years, I firmly feel he is now the best that has ever lived.

This story of Tom Reece is way up there with the John Clark and Jack Ryan level of origin stories…. And I can’t wait to read about Thomas Reece II someday!!!

I’m only halfway through the book so far, but am completely blown away. This earns six out of five stars for me. Will report after I have finished, but I am fortunate enough to get to read the hardcover as well as listing to the incomparable Ray Porter narration, and truly can’t decide which I like better.

Safer to listen to Ray in the car though.

I would give this six stars if it was an option.

Masterful storytelling, incredible detail…

The 1960s is an amazing historical period not the least because of the Vietnam Conflict! The undeclared war is the backdrop of Cry Havoc! Extremely well written with a compelling story, we learn about Tom Reese and his role in conflict! Great characters, serious detail, and so interesting! Jack Carr is an amazingly humble talent. We are blessed he writes so we can joyously read!

Reads like interesting and compelling history!

Up until a few years ago I had no idea who or what MACV-SOG was. Because of Jocko Willink I became aware of these amazing men. As an ICU nurse I have always said if it’s your turn to die it’s your turn to die. These men prove that point . All of these men who survived those horrible years in Vietnam should have died many times over. As Jack Carr recommends at the end of his book, I highly recommend the books and podcasts. Amazing stories, amazing men, amazing Americans. The line between fiction and non-fiction is definitely blurred in this high octane novel. Carr not only entertains the reader but also educates us. Leave it to Carr to write a pager turner that has violence of action, wonderfully written characters (good and bad guys) and break your heart along the way. The Frank Quinn and Amiuh HEARTBREAKING!!! Thank you Jack Carr for this novel, it will become a classic. Oh, and Ray Porter …. Brilliant as always.

A beautiful tribute to Vietnam vets, especially MACV-SOG

Amazing story and gives the reader an inside look into how Reece developed into the amazing character he is in the Terminal List series. After having read tons of MACVSOG books and listened to numerous podcasts on this forgotten era - Jack completely crushed it. I cannot wait for what comes next!

Historically accurate fiction
