At a top-secret Army training facility in the Mojave Desert, Special Agents Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor plunge into a deadly web of military intrigue, AI technology, and robot soldiers as they unravel the shocking murder of a senior scientist in this gripping thriller from New York Times bestselling authors Nelson DeMille and Alex DeMille.

Army CID Special Agents Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor team up for their toughest assignment yet as they are dispatched to Camp Hayden to investigate the death of Major Roger Ames, the chief scientist in charge of the top-secret war games being conducted between a platoon of Army Rangers and a fleet of “lethal autonomous weapons.” Brodie and Taylor find themselves at ground zero of the next generation of warfare, and must untangle the complex web of alliances, animosities, and secret agendas among the men and women of the isolated facility.

In a place cut off from the world and exposed to the harsh desert elements, everyone is a suspect—from the zealous camp commander who pushes his men to the limit, to the Rangers slipping into madness due to isolation, grueling training, and rampant abuse of performance-enhancing drugs, to the late Major Ames’s own research colleagues. Brodie and Taylor must uncover layers of deception to find the hidden hand behind the murder of Major Ames, and the real purpose of the activities at Camp Hayden and its terrifying arsenal of next-generation weapons.

This gripping thriller, the final novel from the legendary Nelson DeMille, coauthored with his son Alex DeMille, is a masterful blend of suspense and cutting-edge technology. It is a page-turning and thought-provoking exploration of the implications of AI in modern warfare and is a must-read for fans of military thrillers.

This book is so well written. I know I will miss Nelson DeMille and sincerely hope that his son Alex will continue with this series. I don’t know how much of this book was written by him and how much his father but it certainly reads like it was written by the father!
In this book Scott Brodie is investigating the murder of a scientist by a robotic AI. It’s not supposed to be capable of learning but to the surprise of its makers it can. It takes Brodie and his partner most of the book to finally figure this out. But there is one person who is aware of what the AIs are capable of doing, for what becomes obvious reasons he’s not at the army facility.
This book is a little creepy when you think about the capabilities of AI and that what you’re listening to is probably a reality that is in the not too distant future. Unless it’s already here and we’re just not being informed and maybe it’s better that way.
Scott Brick does a phenomenal job narrating (as always)!
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

I highly recommend this audiobook. It more than delivers in every category. One of my favorite authors and narrator.

Amazing!!!

Excellent story as expected and excellent narration as expected. A little scary in light of current US situations, but well written, not to mention well performed by Scott Brick, whom I love listening to. It would be cool if Alex wrote a screen play of this story and I know exactly the actor who would fit the wise-cracking Scott Brodie. No question the part would be perfect for Ryan Reynolds.

I know the father/son writing team is no more, since Nelson DeMille passed away in 2024, but I somewhat selfishly hope that Alex continues the Scott & Maggie saga. I look forward to more.

Love the Scott & Maggie stories

I really like this book series The beginning and middle of the book were a bit difficult to follow but the end was so amazing I am hooked completely and have been since the beginning

the ending was amazing

I was a little apprehensive about someone taking over for my favorite author, even if it was his son. This book was awesome. It was old school DeMille with a modern understanding of the world. I'm looking forward to the next book already.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree

The story was boring for some areas in book. Regarding the Tin Men and they’re growing knowledge. That was a forgone conclysion

It got boring

Overall, understand they weren’t writing a horror novel, but Terminator mixed with Jurassic Park was doable here. Isolated desert base, killer military ai beings. At the least had to start the book with a first person POV of the murder at the beginning (again like a Jurassic Park) characters are far from what was built in the Charm School.

This could have been so much better

Even Scott Brick’s over emphasized narration can’t make this a good listen. Actually the narration made the story so “over the top” that I couldn’t listen any longer.

Poor Story Telling
