Acerca de esta escucha

The first in a new in-depth nonfiction series examining the devastating terrorist attacks that changed the course of history from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jack Carr and Pulitzer Prize finalist James M. Scott, beginning with the 1983 Marine barracks bombing in Beirut.

1983: the United States Marine Corps experiences its greatest single-day loss of life since the Battle of Iwo Jima when a truck packed with explosives crashes into their headquarters and barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. This horrifying terrorist attack, which killed 241 servicemen, continues to influence US foreign policy and haunts the Marine Corps to this day.

Now, the full story is revealed as never before by Jack Carr and historian and Pulitzer Prize finalist James M. Scott. Based on comprehensive interviews with survivors, extensive military records, as well as personal letters, diaries, and photographs, this is the authoritative account of the deadly attack.

Very informative

Master storytelling about a subject that has faded from many memories. I always enjoy Ray Porters ability to tell a story.

How little I knew about this topic.

Attention to detail. Jack Carr conveys his intense passion for capturing the whole story from the eyes of the boots on the ground.

History We All Should Know

I can’t do anything but praise this book. I have already recommended it to my friends. I was in high school when the Beirut Marine Barracks bombing occurred. I don’t remember much from that time other than many people died. There was so much more that I just didn’t know and that’s a shame. I believe now this should have been viewed in home room or history class.

The stories of the many Marines were so tragic. American families suffered much loss. It was good there was analysis afterwards to determine what may have lead to the bombing. The Marines were there on a peacekeeping mission but few in Lebanon wanted peace. It was interesting to hear from President Reagan’s diary his private thoughts and hopes for the mission.

The narrator was excellent. It was a well paced audiobook. I hope Jack Carr will continue to write nonfiction books in addition to his fictional series. Highly recommend.

I was so unaware

I lived through these years but was in high school and did not wrap my mind around anything more than just how sad it was that so many Marines were killed.
The true story revealed in this book just overtook my emotions. Anger!, Empathy, Sadness.
I have always admired Jack Carr, that is why I purchased this book.
Sir, this is your best!
Thank you for writing this

American tragedy

The Beirut terrorist attack against our marines is a heartbreaking story of a bureaucratic attempt to be politically correct while attempting to negotiate with terrorists. The marines heroically faced exposure to snipers, mortars, and car bombs while simultaneously not being allowed to even carry magazines in their rifles. The result was a tragedy on a scale not previously seen. This act of terrorism is one of the primary predecessors leading to the development of the 9/11 attack on New York.

My own conclusion after reading this book is that terrorism must NEVER be allowed to chase the US away from its objectives. Also, the US must only choose objectives that actually matter to minimize unnecessary exposure. Reagan listened to advisors that were seeking their own glory, and we should not have been in Beirut!

A great history lesson

Jack Carr did a phenomenal job detailing the Beirut bombing. You would think we learn from history. This book should be a part of any history class.

Important

Tough and moving and important reading for leaders of Marines. This should make the Commandant's Reading List for SNCO's and up.

Semper Fi
