Detective Sergeant Aaron Fowler of the Metropolitan Police doesn’t count himself a gullible man. When he encounters a graphologist who deduces people’s lives and personalities from their handwriting with impossible accuracy, he needs to find out how the trick is done. Even if that involves spending more time with the intriguing, flirtatious Joel Wildsmith than feels quite safe.

Joel’s not an admirer of the police, but DS Fowler has the most irresistible handwriting he’s ever seen. If the policeman’s tests let him spend time unnerving the handsome copper, why not play along?

But when Joel looks at a powerful man's handwriting and sees a murderer, the policeman and the graphologist are plunged into deadly danger. Their enemy will protect himself at any cost, unless the sparring pair can come together to prove his guilt and save each other.

I actually read this on ebook before it came out on audiobook, then listened to it when I saw Cornell Collins was narrating, because he’s the best. This story is just kind of a bummer, though, because it feels like it’s setting up a much longer and involved mystery and world that gets truncated and solved and wrapped up all too quickly. Idk if Charles is tired of her own tricks (I am not, for what it’s worth), but this felt like the first half of a book instead of a full novel. Wanted so much more.

I love all Charles’ work, and Collins is THEEEE best narrator

Though I’m an avid fan of several English classic romances, not many contemporary English period M/M romances have charmed me enough to want to read them again. However, this new story by the prolific KJ Charles, perfectly narrated by Cornell Collins, has turned out to be my perfect cup of high tea (see what I did there), and is the latest on my list of eminently re-readable stories in this genre.
This take on the opposites-attract trope is very well written and entertaining. In spite of their quirky and inauspicious beginning, the two MCs unexpectedly become a very charming pair, especially as they get to understand each other better. The resolution, though a bit neat, is yet thoroughly satisfying; which is an unusual feat, though obviously not for this writer.
I’ve already added her newest and upcoming titles to my wishlist.

A quite charming, very English romance

KJ Charles upholds a standard of quality that is truly unmatched. This book is engaging from start to finish and is clearly well researched. While a romance, it has a rich setting and touches on themes of the time that resonate in today’s society as well.

I wish I could give this 6 stars! I hope it is part of a series but am not disappointed if it’s a standalone. The romance was on the lighter side compared to others but it still ended with a solid HFN and I believe in this couple for the long haul.

As with most of this author’s books it will likely be a repeat listen. Speaking of listening, I forget how lovely Cornell Collins’ voice is so that was an extra treat.

I went into this book completely blind as I was just looking for something to keep me entertained during a travel day, but holy crap it captured my heart. The storytelling is a beautifully done period piece thriller, and the two main characters are lovable, well-built out and absolutely charming. There is spice that was masterful and sexy, and more importantly the raw chemistry and emotions literally made my heart hurt at times. I absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a period romance or a British period thriller with a dark atmosphere.

Beautiful and thrilling story
