"Wildly inventive, twisty tour de force"—BookPage
The lush Gothic drama of Crimson Peak meets the murderous intrigue of Knives Out with an LGBTQIA+ love story to die for from award-winning author KJ Charles.
WHO WILL SURVIVE LACKADAY HOUSE?
When Zeb Wyckham is summoned to a wealthy relative’s remote Gothic manor, he is horrified to find all the people he least wants to see in the world: his estranged brother, his sneering cousin, and his bitter ex-lover Gideon Grey. Things couldn’t possibly get worse.
Then the master of the house announces the true purpose of the gathering: he intends to leave the vast family fortune to whoever marries his young ward, setting off a violent scramble for her hand. Zeb wants no part of his greedy family—but when he tries to leave, the way is barred. The walls of Lackaday House are high, and the gates firmly locked. As the Dartmoor mists roll in, there’s no way out. And something unnatural may be watching them from the house’s shadowy depths…
Fear and paranoia ramping ever-higher, Zeb has nowhere to turn but to the man who once held his heart. As the gaslight flickers and terror takes hold, can two warring lovers reunite, uncover the murderous mysteries of Lackaday House—and live to tell the tale?

I love KJ Charles, who’s written some of my top tier favorites, and this lovely little ode to gothic novels is a gem among them. I don’t always love the exes trope, but I think it works superbly here plot-wise.

The was a fast paced story with fun plot twists! I enjoyed the character development, as well.

The narrator did an excellent job at making each character an individual

This is by far the author’s crowning jewel of their career; a Gothic thriller with a touch of love, tragedy, and mystery. I was in the edge of my seat the entire time! My new favorite book by KJ Charles.

Amazing Mystery and Thriller

I've bought everything written by KJC, and this has been one of my favorites. The plot was well-thought, the language and writing were careful and easy to understand, and the characters were lovely. Sonny Archer is also a superb narrator! This was a glorious listen.

Another KJ Charles Masterpiece

Really liked this one, Reminded me of “Think of England” as we again have a gathering in an isolated county house/manor, main characters who antagonize each other at the beginning (or it seems so) and a lot of uncovered skeletons, figurative and otherwise. But the author is not repetitive, and presented a new and fresh story, playing with my expectation several times. Most importantly, I really liked the protagonist here. At the start I was not sure that I would, but by the end I really adored the man. And the love story is lovely and heartfelt. Overall, 5/5.

A delightful book
